Tales from the Rural Patrol

Monday, June 13
*A black Audi A9 was
apparently abandoned at the south end
of Sauer’s Flat, in the 23500 block
of Redwood Hwy. at 10:36 a.m. The
Audi was ticketed to be towed on
Tuesday, June 14 at 10:45 a.m.
*Parents and their child were
screaming at the principal of Lorna
Byrne Middle School and refusing to
leave the campus at 11:20 a.m. They
were upset because their child could
not walk in the moving on ceremony
on Wednesday. Ironically, the father
was wearing a black sleeveless shirt
that read, “I don’t have an anger
problem.” The grandfather then
arrived, adding to the ruckus. The
whole family was advised not to
return for the duration of the school
year or the school officials will pursue
charges.
*Photos were obtained of a
damaged vehicle in the 100 block of
S. Hussey Avenue at 1:10 p.m.
*The operator of a Passat in the
100 block of Caves Hwy. at 1:51 p.m.
was given a verbal warning because
the tint was too dark on the car’s front
windows.
*A young girl, approximately
four to six years old, had her baseball
bat and a fold-up table, and she was
having a yard sale in the bike lane of
the 400 block of E. River Street at
2:30 p.m. Adults at that location were
advised that children need to sell their
items from the yard, not the roadway.
(That’s why it’s called a ‘yard’ sale.)
*An out-of-state fugitive was
apprehended following a traffic stop
in the 200 block of S. Redwood Hwy.
Joshua Kniffen, 40, was detained at
Josephine County Jail on a fugitive
warrant from Missouri. He was also
cited for no valid operator’s license,
no insurance, and failure to renew
registration.
Tuesday, June 14
*Things got ugly in the 1700
block of White School (House) Road
at 11:17 a.m. with an employee
who had been fired. The disgruntled
employee had lived in a house on the
property for six years, and he was
causing a disturbance on the farm.
When law enforcement arrived, it
was determined that there was no
injury, no assault and no crime, and all
parties were advised of their options.
A civil attorney will be consulted.
*A silver-colored Ford Escape
and a Ford truck collided when
one driver stopped for a pedestrian
using the crosswalk at 1:08 p.m. The
operator of the second vehicle was
cited into Cave Junction Municipal
Court for following too closely. There
were no injuries, so apparently the
pedestrian made it across the road in
the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy.
*The disgruntled employee
was gruntled again, and back at the
1700 block of White School (House)
Road at 1:15 p.m. He was messing
with irrigation supplies, shutting off
the water pump and generally being
a nuisance. Medical personnel on
scene requested law enforcement, but
the patient refused contact. Josephine
County Animal Control responded
to a report of a dog chained to a barn
with no water.
*Theft occurred between
noon on May 28 and June 5 when
occupants in the 200 block of N.
Sawyer Avenue were away. A Les
Schwab truck battery valued at $121,
and two seven-gallon propane tanks
worth $100 were stolen. The theft was
reported June 10.
*At 4:28 p.m., a motorist
was stopped at Redwood Hwy. at
Rockydale Road for speeding through
Cave Junction city limits. Citations
were written for speeding 60 m.p.h.
in a 45 m.p.h. zone, failure to carry
proof of insurance and warnings for
exhibition of speed and a defective
passenger side tail light.
Wednesday, June 15
*A guy phoned 911 claiming
that his black Audi A6 Quatro was
stolen a few days ago from milepost
7 on Caves Hwy. He found the Audi
between Selma and Kerby with an
orange tag, possibly a tow tag. When
he sent his buddy to get the car, they
couldn’t find it. The caller had just
purchased the car from the registered
owner and had the paperwork with
him, but the car was missing. Valley

The volunteers and staff of the
Illinois Valley Fire District
Responded to these recent Emergency calls
Wreckers did not tow the car, and
neither did Jerry’s Tow, but they had
spotted a black Audi in the brush and
trees about a mile up Kerby Mainline.
The Audi-owner requested that law
enforcement stand by and guard the
vehicle until he could have it towed.
He was nervous to recover his vehicle
alone since it had already been stolen
from him twice in a week.
*Telephone service was out
in Cave Junction, and citizens were
unable to phone 911. Phones were
being rerouted to go through the fire
stations at 9:49 a.m.
*On June 11 between 6 and
6:15 a.m., an out-of-control woman
known as Christina broke out the back
window of a car in the 500 block of
S. Redwood Hwy. She then broke
through the back door of a house
and started attacking a woman living
there. The attacked woman ended
up with a black eye and a chipped
tooth, and she would like to press
assault charges and possibly obtain
a restraining order (RO) against her
violent neighbor.
*A ham radio operator knew
who keyed up on the Josephine
County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) radio.
The impromptu communicator lives
in the Ken Rose area, and he was
talking to his mother.
*The owner of a black Jeep was
warned for parking on the sidewalk in
front of Bagel Junction at 1:54 p.m.
*A squatter was reported at the
old Deer Creek Park in the 6300 block
of Deer Creek Road at 2:32 p.m. Law
enforcement located a tent, but no one
was present.
*A very large black 1000-gallon
water storage tank was stolen from
Lake Selma’s Mallard Loop in the 500
block of Reeves Creek Road between
10 p.m. June 5 and 7:30 a.m. June 6.
A camper reported that they heard a
truck early in the morning, but they
thought it was workers and did not
bother to see who it was or what they
were doing. A flat-bed trailer would
have been needed to haul the tank
away. An identical tank was stolen
from Osprey Loop April 11.
*Did anyone lose an
identification card? One was found at
3:29 p.m., and will be available at the
Josephine County Sub Station in the
200 block of W. Lister Street when the
warned for possession on U.S. Forest
Service land at 5:16 p.m.
Saturday, June 18
*A father in the 100 block of
Deer Creek Road was sitting in a
parking lot, waiting to pick up his
son at 11:45 a.m. His ex-wife’s friend
sprayed pepper spray through the
passenger side of his truck, hitting
the dad in the face. The ex’s friend
was in a small silver-colored Honda
coupe with California disabled license
plates, and lives off Hogue Drive.
Advice was given regarding the
process for stalking order violation
(SOV). A report will be filed for
unlawful use of tear gas/mace,
second-degree.
*No one was around at 1:02
p.m. when law enforcement checked a
camp in the 6300 block of Deer Creek
Road.
*A lass in a pink shirt and white
capris was caught going through
things in the manager’s office and
refusing to leave a business in the
200 block of W. Watkins Street at
2:24 p.m. The manager retrieved the
paperwork, then requested that the
wandering woman with the inquiring
mind be warned for trespass.
*At 2:43 p.m., a not-so-helpful
witness phoned 911 to report that her
friend was being assaulted next door
in the 1000 block of Lakeshore Drive.
The only problem was the phone call
was disconnected, and there were five
possibilities of which property was
“next door” to the given location.
*Here we go again with a wife’s
friend: This time there was an assault
in the 1300 block of Lakeshore Drive
at 3:30 p.m. when a husband was
scratched by his wife’s friend. He said
his wife was “going ballistic” and she
threatened to kill him if he didn’t give
her money. When asked to clarify, he
said that she was taking property out
of the house, but was not physically
threatening him. He was advised that
the wife can legally come into the
house and take property because they
are married, and that he needed to
talk to a lawyer about that aspect. A
deputy would not be able to tell her
she cannot remove property.

Friday, June 17
*A 2006 Ford Escape was rear-
ended by a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse
in the Junction Realty parking lot in
the 100 block of N. Redwood Hwy. at
10:37 a.m. The owner of the Eclipse
did not have insurance because he had
just bought the Mitsubishi.
*Grayback Campground Road
was patrolled at 2:08 p.m.
*Law enforcement made
the rounds at the Josephine Camp
Campground at 3:16 p.m. Several
campers had already been there for
seven days, and they left behind their
tent with a raft and tubes and several
bags of garbage.
*A marijuana enthusiast at Little
Falls Trailhead Campground was

Thursday, June 16
*An unsuccessful attempt was
made to contact someone in the 900
block of Indian Creek Road at 2:29
p.m.
*The driver of a Nissan Sentra
was warned for speeding at milepost
27 on Hwy. 199 at 3:36 p.m.
*A motor vehicle flipped over
into a creek near Pomeroy Dam at
3:43 p.m. The wheels had just been
registered with the Department of
Motor Vehicles a couple of days ago.
*The intended recipient of an
RO was not available in the 100 block
of Forest Creek Road at 3:50 p.m.
*There were no sounds of a
disturbance heard on a 911 call from
the 3700 block of Holland Loop at
4:26 p.m.
*This time the fired employee
kicked someone when he returned
to the 1700 block of White School
(House) Road at 6:19 p.m. The ex-
employee was in turn kicked in the
face. Due to lack of resources, Oregon
State Police (OSP) phoned for backup
to handle the situation.

*A stolen silver-colored
Mitsubishi pickup truck with a blue
cab was recovered in the 1700 block
of Caves Hwy. at 3:48 p.m. This was
the truck reportedly stolen by the 15-
year-old runaway teenager.
*Law enforcement assisted
at the Lorna Byrne Middle School
graduation ceremony in the 100 block
of S. Junction Avenue at 5:55 p.m.
