Butterflies take center stage
at nature and art festival
A free, family-friendly event, the Nature
& Art Festival at Rusk Ranch Nature Center
(RRNC) will take place June 26 from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
Featured activities include a Bugs-R-
Us presentation beginning at 11 a.m. and the
Southern Oregon Guild’s “Red Tent” offering
hands-on community art.
In addition, a children’s craft project tent
will be hosted by Illinois River Valley Arts
Council and a “Salmon Run” eco-game will be
offered.
Admission to the Butterfly Pavilion will
be half price at $3 during the festival. Other
activities include a natural playground and
food vendors.
In response to the loss of summer school
at Evergreen Elementary this year, RRNC
is sponsoring SUN School July 12 through
Aug. 4. The Tuesday and Thursday summer
enrichment program will take place from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is designed to prevent
summer learning loss in reading, math and
science.
Certified K-12 instructor Kaci Elder
and assistants will offer exploratory activities
around the themes of dinosaurs, gardening and
pollinators.
Enrollment is sliding scale or free, based
on need. For more information, call 541-287-
0172.
RRNC Executive Director Patty
Downing stated, “Rural students have fewer
opportunities for learning during the summer,
compared to student in urban areas. Summer
programming is an important component of
fostering academic success.”
Downing explained that low income
students lose approximately two months of
reading achievement over summer, while
higher income peers often gain ground.
Summer learning loss is cumulative over time
and can contribute significantly to what is
termed the “achievement gap.”
“Our kids deserve all the support we can
give them,” Downing said.
Rusk Ranch Nature Center is open
Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m., with extended hours beginning in July.
The Center is located at 27746 Redwood
Hwy. across from Great Cats World Park.

some classroom training with hands-on lessons
and you will learn first aid, fire safety, emer-
gency medicine, leadership methods, teamwork
and much more. You will develop emergency
