IVHS track starts
historic season

The 2016 IVHS track season
is off to a fast start with lots of new
faces and personal records. The team,
led by head coach Paul Jackson, has
already traveled to several meets from
Medford to Winston to Brookings.
With the senior standouts near
the end of their high school career, it
is encouraging to have so many new
faces willing to work. The practice
is already paying off as a number of
spikers have their sights on the state
meet.
The new and returning athletes
are finding their niches in the
competitions and trying new things,
getting stronger, and having fun. A
few standout performances lately
were achieved by Allysa Lewin,
javelin; Tyler Stevens, sprints; Halona
Jackson, sprints and long jump;
Savannah Baez, high jump; Austin
Young, discus; Dean Hern, long jump;
Chase Nelson, high jump and shot
put; and near and dear to assistant
coach Ray Brown’s heart, the distance
duo of Tyler Blind and Evan Vallot
came to life the past couple of weeks
to dramatically improve their times
in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. (If
you haven’t guessed, coach Ray was
a distance runner of days long past.)
The team will soon be hosting its first
meet on the new, all weather track
May 6, with their new hurdles and
warm up uniforms, paid for mostly by
Adidas, Umpqua Joe 1859 chapter of
E. Clampus Vitus and the Sportsman
Tavern. Track meets are always
entertaining and this team promises
to not disappoint, so mark it on your
calendar and come see a good facet of
Cave Junction representing our town.
There are five weeks left of
competition, culminating in Portland
at the state meet for qualifiers.
