Tales from the Rural Patrol
(Editor’s Note: Factual information for ‘Tales’
is provided by official law enforcement agencies.
All persons listed are innocent until proven guilty
in a court of law. Charges can be amended or
dismissed.

Monday, Dec. 2
*Oregon State Police (OSP) advised the
Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO)
that a Kia with California license plates
and carrying three persons had been rolled
at 9200 Takilma Road. American Medical
Response (AMR) and Illinois Valley Fire
District (IVFD) responded, but OSP did not
because the crash “did not meet criteria for a
response.” Emergency responders noted “no
impairment and no injuries,” although the
driver later said that he might have broken a
wrist, but would seek his own medical aid.
The driver’s ID was redacted so it was a case
of Name Unavailable Totally (NUT).
*Something to do with “sex” was logged
from Lone Mountain Road in O’Brien, but all
details were redacted by JCSO.
*Indications are that civil papers possibly
were served at a business in Western Plaza in
CJ.
*A restraining order was to be served on
Three Mill Road in Selma.
*There was an anonymous complaint
that a dark blue dirt bike had been ridden
by a man without a helmet in the vicinity
of S. Kerby Avenue and W. Watkins Street.
The caller was asked to call again when the
incident was occurring.
*At the north end of the city of Cave
Junction a father was said to be fighting with
his daughter. Dishes were thrown, it was
stated, but that later was changed to “verbal
only” although the woman said that the
father, who is on the lease and lives there, has
assaulted her previously.
*There was a request for a welfare check
on Hamilton Avenue in CJ for someone
(NUT) who had been transported by AMR
the week before. A volunteer at the JCSO
substation in CJ was concerned because of
not being able to contact the person. Contact
was attempted.
*Something happened somewhere, but all
information about the incident, including the
location, was redacted by JCSO.
*At 4:43 p.m. OSP was advised by 911
of a motor vehicle accident on Redwood
Hwy. at Laurel Road, and that a man and a
woman at the scene were having a domestic
disturbance. It was stated that the man “threw
the woman out of the vehicle.” Two troopers
were responding from Grants Pass, and a
deputy went to the site, but there was no one
around and no vehicle.
*Two motorists (NUT) were stopped
on Sawyer Avenue, and both were cited on
charges of failure to obey a “Stop” sign.

*In what might be some sort of record for
a single day in rural parts of the county, 25
incidents were logged.
Tuesday, Dec. 0
*Someone stole an ‘87 Honda from
Schumacher Street. The complainant said
that the car had a bunch of her stuff in it, as
she was in the process of moving. Most other
info was redacted except for a mention that a
few nights earlier someone removed the car’s
windshield wipers.
*Someone else reported that an older
van, in which people with children might
be living, is seen frequently parked in the
vicinity of the Lorna Byrne Middle School
track off Old Stage Road.
*For a reason not in the log, the area of
Ken Rose Lane and Cascade Drive beyond a
BLM gate on a so-called power line road was
patrolled in the afternoon.
*In the 25000 block of Redwood Hwy.,
a woman said that Dec. 22 she discovered,
after hearing noises at 4 a.m., that a storage
shed had been broken into “and all of their
camping and hunting gear had been stolen,
along with their wheelbarrow. Because there
are several homeless camps in the woods
behind their home, she suspects (homeless

Left at the scene was a headlamp on an elastic
band, but no identifying marks or name.” A
report was pending on burglary and theft,
both in the second degree.
*In another incident of second-degree
burglary, a woman on Palmer Street in CJ
stated that Dec. 23 she discovered that her
storage shed had been entered. She found
that “all of the useful and valuable tools and
supplies were missing.”
*A man’s ex-wife asked for a welfare
check on W. River Street, as she hadn’t
heard from him since August. The check was
inconclusive.
*JCSO assisted OSP with handling a
multiple-vehicle crash at milepost 16 of
Redwood Hwy. in Selma.
*Although there was some initial
suspicion about a woman’s call from
McMullen Creek Road that she needed IVFD
to help her get into her house for her dogs, it
turned out to be a valid call. She was given
the name of a locksmith.
*It appears that extra patrol was provided
around the Immanuel United Methodist
Church in CJ.
*On Schumacher Street, Edith Nina
Marie Haney, 44, was issued a citation
to appear regarding failure to appear in
connection with “underlying charges of
unlawful possession of a firearm.”

*Sixteen incidents today including one
about a man who went to the JCSO office
in GP to turn in a voodoo doll that someone
mailed him.
Friday, Jan. 2
*At 8:23 a.m. a man (NUT) was said to
be causing a disturbance by honking his horn
(likely his car horn) outside a residence on
Terrace Drive.
*In O’Brien a man (NUT) was in the
house of his former fiancee, and it was said
that he has broken in five times during the
past year. It also was noted that he “likes to

*Eighteen calls and incidents.
Saturday, Jan.
*Following a series of 911 hang-up calls
from the 1000 block of Caves Hwy. the calls
were determined to have been caused by a
child playing with a telephone.
*An unoccupied vehicle said to not be a
hazard was off the roadway in the 1800 block
of Laurel Road.
*Some sort of disturbance was reported
at 1:38 p.m. in the 8000 block of Deer Creek
Road with a woman yelling and screaming,
and a man complaining that someone let the
air out of one of his tires plus threatened to
damage the vehicle. It was a case of Beyond
Available Resources, said JCSO.
*IVFD and AMR responded to the 5000
block of Holland Loop after an emergency
call about a man. It turned out to be an
unattended death.
*Following a 911 hang-up call from
Caves Hwy. and Junction Avenue it was
found to be in connection with a reported
non-in ury traffic accident.
*A welfare check was conducted in
O’Brien for a son who was worried about
his father going to a hospital. The father was
located in a hospital, and the son was advised.

*Ricardo Medina, 53, was arrested on a
charge of fourth-degree assault/strangulation
and taken to county jail. The arrest followed a
report by a woman’s mother that her daughter
“had bruises on her face and body, her eyes
were black and she had cuts all over her.” The
victim told her mom that the accused “got
drunk ... and kept hitting her and pulled her
hair out.”

Sure I am prepared, It won’t happen here, We will be
ok…famous last words. The pristine Illinois Valley provides the
benefits of living in a remote wilderness setting. With that comes
the challenges that a disaster may bring. We are prone to threats
from natural and man-made disasters such as fires, earthquakes,
flooding and weather-related incidents. We could easily be cut off
from help for a number of days or even weeks. Help from Jose-
phine County, the State and FEMA will be delayed.
Are you prepared for a month of no electricity, roads im-
passable, stores and gas stations closed? Are you able to help your
neighbors in a crisis? Are you trained? The Illinois Valley Fire
District is starting a Civilian Emergency Response Team (CERT).
This is a group of neighbors just like you who want to help each
other in a disaster. CERT training will be held on 30 January – 1
Feb. This training will prepare you to help your neighbors and
your community during an emergency.
