local artist’s work is for Grandma aggie

Tucked away in a remote cabin in the Il-
linois Valley, Carol Lindhorse is working hard
on new regalia for Agness Baker Pilgrim’s fast
approaching 90th birthday.
Wearing Lindhorse’s designs, Pilgrim has
made appearances all over the world as one of
the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers. She’s hob-
nobbed with such luminaries as the queen of
Spain and traveled to the Far East to speak for
people there. Recently, at his request, she filled
in for the Dalai Lama at a San Francisco gather-
ing.
Lindhorse is a nationally recognized Na-
tive American regalia artist who designs and
creates dresses and leggings for a wide variety
of customers, from as far away as Canada and
Germany.
Her work has sold all around the country
and was included in a two year traveling exhibit
funded by the National Endowment for the Arts,
American Masterpieces Project titled, “The Art
of Ceremony, Regalia of Native Oregon.” The
2008-09 exhibit celebrated work by members
of the Siletz, Umatilla, Cow Creek and Coquille
bands and was displayed at the Hallie Ford Mu-
seum of Art in Salem, the Tamastslikt Cultural
Institute in Pendleton and the Museum at Warm
Springs.
Lindhorse’s moccasins and leggings have
also been featured in Levi-Strauss runway
shows and specialty shops in New York, San
Francisco, Malibu and Boston for the past four
years. Locally, her work is carried at Raven-
swood Gallery.
She takes pride in the fact that she’s made
over a dozen outfits for Pilgrim and her family;
but with the recent loss of the Levi-Strauss ac-
count, she’s hoping to find donors to help raise
the $3,000 cost of Pilgrim’s new regalia. The
special dress is named “Heart of the People”
because it will be an expression of the commu-
nity’s love and respect for the Takelma elder.
“I know it will mean so much to her,”
Lindhorse explains. “She’s been through a lot
in her life including beating breast and colon
cancer in her 60’s and losing her husband to
cancer about the same time. She’s always been
very generous with her time and offered bless-
ings for new houses and businesses, weddings
and fund-raisers. It never mattered to her who
you were. That’s amazing to me.”
Lindhorse said she had “a bit of a rough
start in life.” When she was young, her father
was struck down with polio and her mother had
a stroke at the age of 36. Lindhorse left home at
the age of 13. She lived in a hollowed out tree
in Big Sur for awhile, learning to find food by
watching what the deer ate.
She eventually married and raised four
children, including local artist Katrina Men-
shenfriend. Her youngest son owns his own
Dutch Brothers franchise in Oregon City. Her
oldest son works in construction and her oth-
er daughter is a beautician. They both live in
Florida with their families. Lindhorse has eight
grandchildren and is about to become a great-
grandmother.
The California native is proud of her lin-
eage which includes Cherokee, Sioux, Shaw-
nee, Potawatomi and Dutch heritage and has
been beading and working with leather since
she was five years old. She’s lived in this area
for 38 years. Her quiet home is made lively by
her pets including four dogs, a rabbit, a horse
and a rescued Chinese duck she raised by hand
whose shrill call sounds like a police whistle.
Her Cherokee grandfather’s last name was
Lindhorst, and she took that name to carry it
forward, changing it slightly to better reflect her
heritage. She created the name Lindhorse, us-
ing the Spanish word “linda,” meaning beauti-
ful, and changed the original suffix to “horse”
to arrive at “beautiful horse.”
Lindhorse is most proud of helping Pil-
grim realize a long-held dream of having five
generations of her family, all dressed in Lind-
horse’s regalia, sing “Amazing Grace” in their
native language. They were able to accomplish
this three years ago when the family traveled to
the Siletz Reservation.
Lindhorse will be the Featured Artist for
Second Friday ArtWalk in Cave Junction on
July 11 and will be accepting donations toward
the new dress. There will be a reception for
Lindhorse at the ArtWalk tent across from Sub-
way between 5 and 8 p.m. She’ll display the
new regalia in progress and other examples of
her work. She’ll also have one or several birth-
day cards for people to sign, so Pilgrim has a
memento of all those who contributed toward
the new regalia.
“So many people have said to me over the
years that they’d like to give Aggie a gift, but
they had no idea what to give her. This is their
chance to show Aggie what she means to them
and thank her for all she’s accomplished in her
life.”
