Life in the
Valley
of Riches
By DAN MANCUSO,
Publisher
I woke up this past Sunday to the sound of my
phone ringing. Who the heck could be calling me at this
ungodly hour, I asked myself. Prying my eyes open, I
sheepishly realized it was already 10 a.m. It was my
daughter Abby calling me to wish me a happy Father’s
After Abby’s call, her sister Ellie called and a ring
from my son John followed shortly after that.
After pouring a few cups of coffee down my gul-
let, we preceded to the IV Grange for their Sunday
breakfast. I had never been to one and I must say it
was really good. When we walked in I was surprised to
know almost everyone there. It made me wonder why
nobody had let me in on this little secret before.
Laura and I headed to the office for a bit. While we
were gone, my step-sons picked cherries from the tree
in our back yard, which in and of itself is a great feat to
see them unattached to their PlayStation.
Like most Sundays, I tried to putz around the
house doing odd chores that escape me during the
week. But, hey, it was Father’s Day, so I decided to
head to the pond to a little fishing. A few hours, and one
monster bass later, I decided to head back to the house
to find Laura and the boys pitting cherries to make a
homemade cherry pie.
It was a very relaxing day, which I don’t seem to
get many of anymore. I spent most of my time with the
family I have here in the Valley. It was nice and I hope
all the fathers out there can say the same.
Now that Father’s Day has come and gone, sum-
mer is in full swing. The Barter Faire is this weekend
so I hope many of you get a chance to hear some great
music and support the Dome School fund-raiser. Speak-
ing of music, Justin Stang and his two-man acoustic
group Science! will be playing at the Chamber of Com-
merce’s Concerts in the Park series Thursday at Jubilee
Park. So, come out and hear one of Seattle’s hottest
bands. If you enjoy them, as I know you will, they will
also be at the Barter Faire on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Thank you for picking up this week’s paper, enjoy!

Remembering Normandy
The program on TV and in our
newspapers a few week’s back made an
accounting of the Normandy invasion
during WWII, 70 years ago that took
so many American lives. Most young
people of our country do not even know
the big sacrifice that was made those
many years ago of so many American
troops that fought the Germans in Nor-
mandy to liberate France, so there would
be peace. I was a little girl of 10 years
old during that time and WWII was go-
ing on and my parents had fine sons in
the military service: 3 Army, 1 Airfare, 1
Navy. All five saw active duty. John was
with the 82nd Airborne, a paratrooper
group of which hundreds of paratroop-
ers were dropped behind enemy lines
just before dawn on June 6th at the same
time our infantry men were landing on
the beaches of Normandy. Showing on
the TV picture was a vivid picture of the
hundreds of marked graves for the men
that fought and died in this battle to save
that country. The odds (of survival) were
not good, we were very fortunate that
all my brothers returned home safely.
John, paratrooper in the Army’s Airborne
Division; Hank served in the Eighth Air
Force based in England where his job
was fueling and loading bombs on B-
17s; George was an infantry man in Ger-
many; Al was an Army lieutenant who
saw action in Africa and Italy; Frank was
a Navy Gunner aboard merchant ships.
My parents Frank Sr. and Isabel
Mellow had a flag in our window with
five stars on it indicating five from this
family in the Armed Services. I think it
is such a shame that the schools do not
teach history. These younger generations
should know and remember what so
many families had to deal with to send
their young men off to war and some
would never return; many are buried at
Normandy and we honor them and also
the GI’s that came home. All my five
brothers are gone now and I will say that
when they each came home after WWII,
none of them would talk about the war
and bloodshed they witnessed. Thanks
to all people that fight for Freedom. God
Bless America and may we always be a
Free Country!
