The Ilinois Valley High School track
team traveled to Bandon to compete in the 3A
Special District I Regional Qualifier this past
weekend.
In the girl’s 100-meter preliminaries, Halona
Jackson took first with a time of 13.73. In the
girl’s 200-meter prelims, Jackson came in third
with a time of 28.59. Theresa Frederick had a
time of 19.86 in the 100-meter hurdles prelims.
In the varsity javelin finals, Alex LaFlamme
had a throw of 80-08. Frederick took first in
the varsity finals high jump, going 4-07.00.
In the boy’s events, Tyler Blind had a
time of 59.09 in the varsity 400-meter prelims.
Joshua Allen took third in the boy’s pole vault
finals with a score of 11-09.00.
In the second day of districts, Jackson
took second in the girl’s 100-meter finals with
a time of 13.58. She also placed third in the
200 meters with a time of 28.10. In the triple
jump finals Jackson went 31-02.50. Jackson
also had a time of 52.55 in the 100-meters
hurdles finals. In the shot put finals Alex
LaFlamme had a throw of 28-09.00 and a
throw of 80-08 in the finals for Javelin. In the
high jump finals, Theresa Frederic went 4-
07.00, taking second place.
In the boy’s events, Tyler Blind had a
time of 59.09 in the 400-meter prelims. He
also had a time of 2:15.22 in the 800-meter
finals. Sam Sandoval had a throw of 113-06 in
the boy’s javelin finals. In the pole vault finals,
Joshua Allan went 11-09.00.
Theresa Frederick and Halona Jackson
will be going to the state championships in
Eugene at Hayward Field on Thursday and Fri-
day, May 22-23. Frederick will be competing
in the high jump while Jackson will compete in
the 100 meters. Both ladies competed in state
last year and worked hard to make it this year.
A personal goal for Frederick is to get onto
the podium while at state. Jackson had a tough
time at districts, but she made a strong come-
back and looks forward to doing well at state.
Both young ladies will be among the first
athletes to use the newly finished track located
at the IVHS football field. The runways will
be completed this week, giving the ladies the
much needed practice just before the state
championships.
Head coach Ray Yarbrough is proud of
all the athletes this season, but does not want
to take away the spotlight from Jackson and
Frederick.
“All the credit goes to the two going
to state,” said Yarbrough. “Every morning I
would open the school weight room and every
morning two students would be consistently
in the room. Both girls showed great dedica-
tion and hard work. They should be proud of
themselves.”
Lady Cougars take wins, boys struggle to get hits
13.

The Lady Cougars started out
shaky this season, but have worked
hard to become a strong squad. This
past week reflects the hard work that
has been put forth.
On Monday, May 12, the Cou-
gars went up against Cascade Chris-
tian while at home in a double-header.
In the first game, Keyanna Augustadt
had two hits and two RBIs. Allison
Primeau and Mahkayla Sommers
each had one hit and an RBI. Miliya
Stewart pitched for both games while
Augustadt caught. Together, the two
were a force to be reckoned with and
gave the Challenger Athletics a tough
game. The Cougars took a win in the
first game with a close score of 14-

During the second game, Sa-
mantha Frederick had three RBIs.
Miliya Sterart had three hits resulting
in two RBIs. Chawna Crawford had
one hit resulting in an RBI. The Cou-
gars grabbed their second win of the
night, 13-7.
“These girls played a great game
of softball,” said head coach Bobbi
Loyd. “I knew they had it in them.”
On Friday, May 16, the Lady
Cougars traveled to Rogue River
for another double-header. The first
game proved to be one of the better
games the girls have played so far
this season. With a huge win of 10-
0, the girls have definitely become a
tight team.
With Stewart pitching and Au-
gustadt behind the plate, they were an
unstoppable team, never allowing a
run to be made by the Rogue River
Chieftains. Alexus Inge had two hits
resulting in two RBIs, while Augus-
tadt connected with the ball getting
two hits and one RBI. Erika Ander-
son also had two hits and two RBIs.
In the second game, the ladies
lost their steam and allowed the
Chieftains to take an early lead. With
a loss of 5-15, the Lady Cougars of-
fense seemed to have dissipated a bit
from the prior three games. Allison
Primeau was the only one that had
two hits during the game.
The Lady Cougars were set to
play their last game against Lakeview
while at home on Tuesday, May 20.
For as much as the softball
squad has come together and become
a team, winning a few games, the
guys seem to be struggling and slid-
ing downhill. On Tuesday, May 13,
the IVHS baseball team traveled to
Saint Mary’s for a single game. Saint

“We’re competitive defensively.

gling,” said head coach Jesse Dugas.
“We have to hit the baseball better.”
On Friday, May 16, IVHS host-
ed a double-header against the Rogue
River Chieftains. In game one, Lander
Nordal was the starting pitcher with
Conrad Davis behind the plate. Eric
Miller finished the game as a reliever.
Even though IVHS pitchers were on
their game, Rogue River had a good
pitcher on the mound and gave up lit-
tle offense. The Chieftains also had a
couple of key hits that put them over
the top, taking the game 5-3.
In the second game, the guys
had a harder time keeping up with
Rogue River. Rogue River won 14-4.

able to connect with the ball, helping
to get the few runs made by IVHS.
Welch had a two run homerun while
Davis went two for two, grabbing a
single and a double.
The guys were scheduled to go
up against Lakeview at home in their
final game of the season on Tuesday,
May 20.
On a side note, the junior var-
sity baseball team played their first
game of the year on Thursday, May
15, against Umpqua Christian. The
Cougars won 15-6.
Tanner Davis pitched with Zak
Lindell behind the plate. The JV team
is freshmen and sophomores with a
senior who has never played before.
“It’s nice to see the younger
class at such a high level,” said Du-
gas.
