Baseball, softball squads both struggle to find wins

The IVHS Cougars baseball team went up against St. Mary’s
while at home on Monday, April 28, in a continuation game. The
game was called due to a heavy hail storm on Friday, April 25.
The Cougars and the Crusaders held each other at bay the whole
game until the last inning when the Crusaders were able to step
up to the plate and score one more run. Zach Welch pitched the
game, holding off the Crusaders with seven strikeouts and four
walks. St. Mary’s won the game, though, by a final of 4-3.
The boys struggled against St. Mary’s in the second game
due to the loss of four starters during the first game. The Cougars
were not able to hold their own and lost the second game 1-11.
St. Mary’s won 11-1. Even with a tough loss, freshman Mason
Thornhill pitched an eight inning game with five strikeouts and
only four walks.
On Tuesday, April 29, the boys went up against the Rogue
River Chieftains while at home. Eric Miller pitched the game,
which lead to extra innings. Miller had one strikeout and two
walks.
“It was a very close game,” said head coach Jesse Dugas.
With extra innings and the players out due to injuries, the

Cougars lost to the Chieftains 5-6.
This last Saturday, May 3, also proved to be a long day for
the Cougars. They traveled over four to Lakeview for a double-
header. With the long trek to play, the boys had trouble getting
their feet back under them.
Senior Zach Welch pitched in the first game and had eight
strikeouts and six walks. The Honkers were just one step ahead
of IVHS the whole game, ultimately taking the win, 3-2.
During the second game, Eric Miller pitched seven innings.
Miller had two strikeouts and five walks. The Cougars were able
to score three runs in the first inning, but went scoreless after
that. Lander Nordal scored a triple and Welch hit a double. The
Honkers took the second game 4-3.
With five games in one week, Dugas feels the team is still
very competitive.
“We got banged up a bit physically, but we stayed competi-
tive,” said Dugas.
The boys were scheduled to go up against Prospect/Butte
Falls on Tuesday, May 6, after this paper’s deadline.

was 0-16.
Like the boys, the Lady Cougars were scheduled to play
Prospect/Butte Falls in a home game on Tuesday, May 6.
On Tuesday, April 29, the Lady Cougars squad went up
against the Chieftains during a home game. The ladies were un-
able to contain Rogue River and lost 11-13.
On Saturday, May 3, the girls traveled with the guys to
Lakeview to compete against the Lady Honkers in a double-
