District not Levy
I am writing in response to a recent series
of articles in the IV News regarding the effort to
get a Library District on the November ballot.
There are a couple of clarifications which I feel
need to be made. The phrases “tax levy” and “li-
brary district” are being used interchangeably,
when they are in fact very different things. A
Library District (which is what is being sought)
is much like a Fire District or a Water District in
that it is not controlled by county government.
An elected Board of Directors would use the
moneys collected from tax payers solely to run
our public libraries here in Josephine County;
that money could not be siphoned off to be used
for any other purpose. Though the article in last
Wednesday’s paper eventually makes that clear,
it is only after using the misnomer of “levy”
multiple times. Potential voters need to know
that any money collected by the Library District
WOULD NOT go into the county general fund
to be used by the commissioners as they see
fit. The formation of a Library District would
make it possible for our libraries to be open
more hours per week and provide more of the
free educational programs that our patrons have
come to expect. I also want readers to know
that there IS an organized signature gathering
effort happening in the Illinois Valley, they just
may not have noticed because we are not per-
mitted to petition outside of Shop Smart or the
Cave Junction Post Office. There is a small,
dedicated force of petitioners who are out on
the streets and if you haven’t seen us yet, not
to worry: You will see us soon! If you would
like to sign the petition or get involved in the
campaign, all you have to do is stop by the IV
Branch of the library. Even if you don’t want
to get involved, you should stop by and see us
anyway- especially if you haven’t visited the
library in a while. We are located at 209 West
Palmer Street in Cave Junction and we are open
Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m., Fridays from 11-3
p.m., and Saturdays from 11-4 p.m. Hope to

Meat round three
In regard to Greg Anderson’s letter of
January 29, 2014 where he ridiculed my letter
of January 15 in which I upheld a vegetarian
diet, he called those who advocate a vegetar-
ian or vegan diet “radical” and “peculiar.” Mr.
Anderson, why are you mocking and jesting
against the All-Wise God who placed man into
a garden and then instructed him and declared
to him that man should live by a plant-based
vegan diet – Genesis 1:29 (fruits); Genesis 3:18
(herb, grains, vegetables)? In your faulty opin-
ion is He “radical” and “peculiar?” Your accu-
sations run contrary to scripture and contrary to
the God who made man in His image. The buck
does not stop with you or with me. The buck
stops with Him who constructed and designed
the human body and then placed man in the
midst of what he should eat – a garden and He
equipped man with the molars to handle it all.
When you eat the unbled meat that you
claim you like, it is a slap in the face of the God
who designed you. He calls it an abomination –
Leviticus 17:10, 11. He hates it when you defile
your inner body with animal blood, and He will
withdraw His Holy Spirit from the man whose
“God” is his belly and from those who defile the
body temple which He claims as His dwelling
place. – Corinthians 3:16, 17.
Greg, the Apostles of Jesus have given to
you a New Testament reminder. They got to-
gether in Acts 15:20 and again in Acts 21:25 to
still again repeat the warning that God gave in
the beginning to not eat blood in any form. How
many times does the great designer of our bod-
ies have to tell certain people something before
they will believe Him??
Cut your septic pump-outs in half; eat
vegetarian.

passed away Tuesday, Febru-
ary 4, 2014 at her home.

Phyllis R. Gazaway,
78 died, Saturday, January 11,
2014 at Rogue Valley Medical
Center in Medford, Oregon.

Patricia was born No-
vember 10, 1948 in Oxnard,
California to Wayne & Betty
Vineyard. In 1968 she mar-
ried Loren Conner and in 1979
they moved to Cave Junction.
She was a stay-at-home mom
and also volunteered to teach
a cooking class at Family Re-
sources in Cave Junction.
Patricia enjoyed being
involved with her church, trav-
eling, and a “good yard sale.”
She is survived by her
husband, Loren Conner of
Cave Junction; three children,
She was preceded in
death by her parents; Ray and
Janie Fernlund, her broth-
ers; Douglas and baby Daniel
Fernlund, her baby grandson;
Dakota Dillard and her baby
great-grandson; Blake Dillard.
Survivors include her two
daughters; Lynette Gundlach
of Medford, Ore. and Sandy
Dillard of Selma, two brothers;
Anthony and Michael Fern-
lund of Utah and her former
husband Roy Gazaway from
Arizona. She had ten grand-
children and sixteen great-
grandchildren and one great-
grandchild soon to be born.
Phyllis was born Febru-
ary 3, 1935 in Medford and
spent most of her life in Or-
egon. Her father was a car-
penter and retired mill worker.
She lived in at least two of the
homes her father built. Her
mother worked in the White
City VA Domiciliary which is
now called the White City VA
Southern Oregon Rehabilita-
tion Center where her grand-
son Keith Dillard has been
employed there for almost 6
years. Her mother Janie Pansy
Fernlund died on April 20,
1987 and exactly 8 years later
(same day and month), her fa-
ther Raymond Winter Fernlund
died on April 20, 1995 (day af-
ter Phyllis died, they were in
the same hospital, same time.)
Phyllis was a compas-
sionate, kind-hearted, giving
and very thoughtful person
who never had one bad word
to say about anyone and she
loved her family very much.
Her other love and passion
was a strong belief in the Gos-
pel of Jesus Christ. She loved
her Heavenly Father and she
served him all her life and was
a wonderful missionary and
member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Her hobbies were read-
ing educational and spiritu-
ally uplifting books, writing,
music, camping, going to the
beach, shopping, crafts, col-
lecting things, cooking, swim-
ming and traveling when she
could. She loved life, people
and healthy ways of living.
A funeral service was
held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday,
January 18, 2014 at the LDS
church on 3465 Bellinger
Lane, Medford at the Medford
Jacksonville 4th Ward. A fam-
ily gathering was held follow-
ing the service at the Gundlach
home in Medford.
Emma Lou Thomas,
age 78 , of Cave Junction, died
Monday, February 3, 2014 at
her home.
A memorial service will
be at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb-
ruary 6, 2014 at Bridgeview
Community Church. Private
interment will be at Laurel
Cemetery. Illinois Valley Fu-
neral Directors are in charge of
arrangements.

Emma was born June
26, 1935 in Roswell, New
Mexico to Earl and Hope Ar-
nett. She was the youngest of
11 children. In January 1955
she joined the United States
Army and while stationed in
Anniston, Ala. she met Marvin
Thomas. After her honorable
discharge, they were mar-
ried on September 7, 1957 in
Waterford, Calif. She moved
from Waterford to Cave Junc-
tion, 42 years ago.
Emma volunteered by
teaching English to help peo-
ple gain their U.S. citizenship.
She also organized a weight
loss group.
Emma was a self-taught
painter; she also enjoyed read-
ing, designing flower gardens,
cooking, and baking.
In addition to her hus-
band, Marvin C. Thomas of
Cave Junction; she is survived
by a daughter, Hope Roll of
Cave Junction; a son, Mark
Thomas of Windsor, Colo; a
sister, Verna Harmon; a broth-
er, Glen Arnett; five grandchil-
dren; and six great-grandchil-
dren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, Earl &
Hope Arnett; three sisters,
Catherine, Elsie, and Velma;
and five brothers, Loyd, Dar-
win, Wayne, Lawrence and
Alfred.
Diane Dee Wendo-
ver, age 61 , of Cave Junc-
tion, died Friday, January 24,
2014 at her home.
A celebration of life will
be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb-
ruary 15, 2014 at Good Shep-
herd Lutheran Church in Cave
Junction. Illinois Valley Fu-
neral Directors are in charge
of arrangements.
Diane supported many
organizations in her life. Do-
nations may be received at

in Grants Pass to be shared be-
tween her charities.

Diane was born June 28,
1952 in Los Angeles, Califor-
nia to William F. & Barbara
E. Young. In 1970 she gradu-
ated from Villa Park High
School in Anaheim. In 1972
in Orange, California she mar-
ried Robert Wendover. Thirty-
five years ago she moved from
Anaheim, California to Cave
Junction. From 1988 to 2013
she worked at Rough & Ready
Lumber Company as Payroll/
Human Resource Manager.
Diane attended Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church.
She volunteered for the
Illinois Valley Booster Club,
Cave Junction Pool Commit-
tee, planned Illinois Valley
High School graduation night
for 10 years and was Illinois
Valley 2002 Citizen of the
Year.
Diane enjoyed gardening
and especially loved spend-
ing time with her family and
grandchildren.
Survivors include her
husband, Robert Wendover of
Cave Junction; two sons, Rob-
ert W. Wendover and Steven
M. Wendover, both of Grants
Pass; a daughter, Amy M.
Larson of Grants Pass; father,
William F. Young of Grants
Pass; a sister, Kathy Valdizan
of Southern Calif; two broth-
ers, William F. Young Jr of
Lake Forest, Calif and Mark
Young of Temecula, Calif; and
six grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her mother.
