Hoop squads log lots of miles with mixed results

Both IVHS basketball teams logged over a
1,000 miles traveling for games this past week.
On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Cougars trav-
eled to Lost River High where the Lady Cou-
gars played the Raiders in the first game. Even
though the girls played hard, Lost River showed
the team a few things they need to work on. The
Raiders took the game, winning 38-18.
Kimberly Crow and Alex LaFlamme were
the top scorers for IVHS. Crow scored seven
points with LaFlamme not far behind, putting
five points on the board.
The boys had better luck against Lost Riv-
er, taking the game 46-37.
“The key to winning this game was the
boys rebounded well and had great defense,”
said head coach Jeff Winters.
The top scorers were Zach Welch with 18
points and Lander Nordal with eight points and
nine rebounds. Kade Doyle put 10 points on
the board for IVHS, while Tannan Thompson
scored a total of six points.
On Thursday, Jan. 16, IVHS played
against Bonanza. The Lady Cougars had better
luck against the Antlers, winning the game 38-
17. The girls seemed to be on their game, mak-
ing 15 out of 23 free-throws.
Alex LaFlamme was the leading scorer
for IVHS with 12 points and Kimberly Crow
scored ten points. Bonanza’s offense had a hard
time keeping up with the Cougar’s defense. Sa-
mantha Frederick and Kimberly Crow held off
the Antler’s attack throughout the game to give
the Cougars the upper hand.
With only a six-man team, the boys had a
harder time against Bonanza. The Cougars were
strong all through the game and were tied up
until the fourth quarter when Bonanza overtook
IVHS, scoring 17 points in the last quarter. Bo-
nanza won 51-34.
With no lack of effort on the Cougars’
part, Zach Welch was the leading scorer with 15
points. Kade Doyle scored a total of 12 points
and had 12 rebounds, while Lander Nordal had
a total of six points and 11 rebounds.
The IVHS teams traveled to Gold Beach,
ending their crazy traveling schedule. Both
teams seemed to struggle against the Panthers.
Both coaches were in agreement that the kids
were tired from all the traveling that they had to
endure. Both teams, though, put up a fight. But,
the girls struggled to maintain possession and
lost 31-52. Crow and Naviya Dixon both scored
eight points for the Cougars.
The boys, meanwhile, lost to the Panthers
36-64. They fell behind early and went into the
half trailing 17-33. Welch was able to score 16
points, Nordal had six points and Nick Worley
put three points on the board for IVHS.
Turnovers seemed to be a problem with
both teams.
Even though the boys’ squad has such a
small roster, Winters says they have some of the
strongest players he has ever worked with. He
refers to the team as the “Fab Six.”
“They play hard, don’t give up or com-
plain,” he said. “They stay with the opposing
team and give it their all.”
The Cougar teams were set to host home
games Tuesday, Jan. 21, against Rogue River
with the girls taking the court first.
Wrestlers finish fourth in Redmond

The Illinois Valley High School
wrestling team traveled to Redmond
to compete in the Oregon Wrestling
Tournament, hosted by Redmond
High School Panthers, this past week-
end.
The Cougars went up against
Riverside High during their first
match, ultimately losing to the Pi-
rates. During the third and fourth
matches, IVHS went up against Rain-
ier, but the Cougars were not able to
go match for match against the Co-
lumbians and lost. The Cougars also
wrestled against Glide, with Glide
winning 48-30.
During the semi-finals IVHS
wrestlers went up against Vale, with
Vale taking the win. IVHS placed
fourth overall following the weekend
tournament.
T.J. Hughey and Logan Miller
went 6-0 during the meet, the only
two wrestlers taking all six of their
matches.
IVHS will host a duel tourna-
ment against Phoenix on Thursday,
Jan 23., beginning at 5 p.m.
