IVHS basketball teams take first wins of season

With schedules back on track
things are looking up for the basket-
ball teams at IVHS. Both teams have
been able to put in good practices
and have successful games. This last
week the boys and girls saw their first
wins on Thursday, Jan. 2, while away
at Hidden Valley. The Lady Cougars
played first with a win of 44-43.
“It was a close game all the
way through,” said head coach Loren
King.
With halftime looming, Hid-
den Valley stepped it up and scored
points, leading the game going into
the third quarter. By the end of the
third quarter, IVHS tied the game at
31-31, proving to be a tough match
for the Hidden Valley Mustangs.
Throughout the fourth quarter it was
a tug-of-war game with both teams
fighting for the winning points. As
the final buzzer sounded, both teams
were tied with a score of 41 points,
leading to overtime. On a rebound
from Hidden Valley, Miliya Stewart
drove the ball down the court and
scored the winning points for IVHS.
While Stewart was the last to
score, Kimberly Crow was the lead-
ing scorer with 16 points while Alex
LaFlamme was not far behind with a
total of 13 points scored.
The boys also got a win
against the Mustangs with a final of
47-42. During the first half of the
game, the boys started digging a
hole, allowing too many turnovers
to Hidden Valley, permitting Hidden
Valley to take the lead in the first half
of the game. Before halftime, IVHS
was down 12 points but showed de-
termination during the third quarter.
Dropping their turnovers to around
four, IVHS was able to catch up and
showed great willpower to get their
first win of the season.
Zach Welch led the game
with 17 points, including a clutch
three-pointer in the final quarter.
Conrad Davis was not far behind
with 15 points. Davis also had nine
rebounds during the game. Myles
Hodge, Lander Nordal and Michael
Weiver also were able to get points on
the board for IVHS. Nordal, a senior,
also started for the first time, having a
great game. Not only with four points
scored but had 10 re-bounds and four
assists.
On Saturday, Jan. 4, both
basketball teams traveled over three
hours one way to play against Harris-
burg High. Both teams struggled dur-
ing their games after such a lengthy
bus ride. Again, the Lady Cougars
took the court first with a 15-28 loss
against Harrisburg.
With a good defense all

game, the girls
were not able to
make the shots
needed to stay
competitive with
the Harrisburg
Eagles. Theresa Frederick and Victo-
ria Johnson were the leading scorers,
working hard with the rest of the Lady
Cougars to stay with the Eagles.
Head coach Loren King stat-
ed that he feels the girls are improv-
ing with each practice they are able to
get in now that the basketball sched-
ule is back on track. He said he sees
a lot of room for improvement mov-
ing forward. With 27 turnovers, the
team’s offense still needs improve-
ment. IVHS was also only able to get
in a total of 19 rebounds during the
game.
The boys had a harder time
during their game against Harris-
burg. With a tough 37-65 loss. The
boys seemed sluggish following the
grueling drive. Even with the loss,
the boys did not give up easily. Zach
Welch was able to get in 13 points,
leading the Cougars. Conrad Davis
scored nine points and Myles Hodge
scored eight. Michael Weiver, Bryce
Gardenhire and Lander Nordal also
helped put points on the board with a
combined score of seven points.
Head coach Jeff Winters
knows that with the schedule back on
track, the team will improve greatly
and hopefully take more wins as the
season progresses.
Both teams are scheduled to
play against New Hope Christian on
Tuesday, Jan. 7, while on the road.
On Saturday, Jan. 11, both teams host
their first league game against the
Bandon Tigers, with the Lady Cou-
gars starting things off at 4 p.m.
Wrestlers have good showing at tourney

Fourteen schools participated in the Rogue
Valley Championship at North Valley High this
past Saturday, Jan. 4.
Eagle Point took first place with 286
points, Phoenix High School took second place
with 201 points and Illinois Valley High School
took third place with 169 points.
The Cougars had two first-place wres-
tlers:
At 145 pounds, Logan Miller pinned his
way through his matches. Miller pinned Nate
Hegler in 1:24 and Cole Hornbrook in 1:45.
In the finals, Miller pinned Kay Crandall from
Eagle Point in 2:45.
John Britt, at 182 pounds, took first place
over Markus McGovern. Britt beat Sheldon
Hig 11-2 and Jack Puck from North Bend was

pinned by Britt in 42 seconds. John Britt over-
took Brian Clooney from Eagle Point in 1:33
and Trea Vega was pinned in 1:44.
Zack Clark, at 113 pounds, pinned Jonny
Hulseman in 21 seconds for third place. Manny
Pimental took fifth place, pinning Jarred Hop-
pins from Hidden Valley in 43 seconds.
At 126 pounds, Eric Miller pinned Antho-
ny Neuenschwander in 3:57 in the second.
At 170 pounds, T.J. Hughey lost to Josh
Hammers from Mazama 3-1, but took sixth
place.
At 95 pounds, James Jarret pinned Bran-
don Wrezinski in 1:24. Julian Northup was
pinned in 2:20, but did not compete for third
due to an injury default.
IVHS currently stands at 6-1 for duels.
Cougar wrestlers are scheduled to compete on
Saturday, Jan. 11, during the Crater Classic at
Crater High School.
