CHIEF’S CORNER
By Dennis Hoke
Fire Chief, Illinois Valley Fire District
“I didn’t know its fire season” This response is
becoming almost comical. I hear this almost
daily from residents of the Illinois Valley who
are violating one of the many restrictions in place
from open burning, using a chain saw to mow-
ing. So we can clear up any confusion, “its FIRE
SEASON!” The current conditions are extreme
and will not change until significant rain fall
occurs and fire season has been discontinued.
Long range forecasts show no immediate relief.
Each of us needs to be fire-safety conscious,
especially given the current dry conditions. Even if the Valley receives
some rain from a passing thunderstorm, we will still be in extreme fire dan-
ger conditions. We have already seen the effects of lighting caused fires and
how quickly they can spread. Members of the Illinois Valley Fire District
and the Oregon Department of Forestry stand ready to defend our commu-
nities from wildfire. Let’s not add to the problem with a human caused
event.
We are currently experiencing the same weather and drought condi-
tions as during the Deer Creek fire. The vegetation is dryer now than it has
been in years. In addition, the relative humidity is unusually low in the after-
noons—a factor which can cause fires to spread quickly.
Here is the bottom line “Its FIRE SEASON” be careful! Please report
any illegal burns or violations of the restrictions to 911 and/or ODF.
