Labor Day is once again upon us, and that means that school
is starting soon. It starts the day after Labor Day. Please be care-
ful out there as our children are waiting to get on the busses and
walking to school. Is it worth your life or the life of any other
person to avoid stopping at that stop sign or to speed in a resi-
dential area? Just a little common sense goes a long ways. The
same goes for the students who might think it’s not a big deal, it
won’t happen to me. Talk to your kids about safety. Don’t let the
victims be you or one of your loved ones.
The Labor Day Parade is going to be a good one as usual,
so come out and support your I.V. Lions Club this Labor Day
weekend, August 31 thru September 2 at Jubilee Park.
With the smoke from all the fires you need to be careful out
there. We have good days and some that aren’t so good. Please
help and support your local I.V. Fire District, those people put
in a lot of hours volunteering and putting their life on the line.
Thanks for all the dedicated people that we have here in the Il-
linois Valley. Please, don’t stand back and say that you can’t do
anything. Have you really tried that hard? We really have some
talented people that give a lot of themselves. So, you can make
a difference only if you try and then try again. We welcome you
to any City Council meeting, held on the Second Monday of the
month. The Mayor and Council members are all volunteers, so
all the input we get from citizens is really valuable to us. Maybe
you have talked to one of us and asked about a particular issue
or for more information. If we haven’t gotten back to you, re-
member we are human and we do forget, but not on purpose. So,
a gentle nudge is a good way to jog our memories. If we don’t
have an answer we will try and find out for you, that is a promise
that we take very seriously. Enough of me on the bandstand. I
love what I’m doing, I’m not perfect (just ask my wife and she
will tell you). See you in the park.

Obituaries
Former Cave Junction resident,
Irma L.
Kitterman ,
our precious Wife, Mother,
Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-great-
grandmother and Auntie, went home to be with
the Lord in Fresno, California on August 11,
2013 at the age of 94.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m.,
Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Hope Community
Church in Mt. Shasta, California.
A graveside service will be at 12 Noon, Fri-
day, August 16, 2013 at Laurel Cemetery in
Cave Junction. Illinois Valley Funeral Direc-
tors are in charge of arrangements.
Irma was born in Fort Smith AR on April 2,
1919.
Irma’s loving family and survivors include
husband of 73 years, Don; daughter, Ralpha
Whipple and husband, Don; son, Jan (Skeet)
Kitterman and wife Marla; son, Jim Kitterman
and wife Debbie; son-in-law, Russ Smith; a
daughter, Krisstan Smith preceded her Mother
going to be with the Lord July 22, 2013. Irma
leaves behind 9 Grandchildren, 7 Great-grand-
children, 1 Great-great-grandchild and numer-
ous special Nieces and Nephews.
George Arthur Plumlee March 4,
1938 – August 10, 2013
Former Selma resident, George Arthur
Plumlee of Grant Pass went to be with the Lord
on August 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by
his wife and family after a long illness.
He was born on March 4, 1938 in a log
cabin behind the old Selma Store. Growing up
in the Deer Creek area, he attended Selma Grade
School and graduated from Illinois Valley High
excelling in Track & Field. The records set by
him for shot-putting and the javelin throw still
stand to this day.
On April 20, 1957 he married the love
of his life Eldylee Hembree who survives. In
their 56 years of married life most was spent in
and around the Rogue Valley area where he was
employed in the plywood Industry.
George enjoyed hunting, fishing and
reading L’Amour novels. His greatest joy came
from spending time with his wife and family,
especially the “little ones” and his love for his
savior Jesus Christ.
Along with his wife he is survived by
2 sisters Billie (Aaron) Foller of Grants Pass
and June Duke of White City; a brother Doug
(Sharon) Plumlee of Grant Pass; 3 daughters
Debra (Joe) Woodall, Shelley (Michael) Tovey
and Sherry (Troy) Stillwagon all of Grants
Pass; 8 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren
(# 13 due in February 2014) and many cousins,
nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and
even some great-great nieces and nephews.
His parents and a sister, Thelma John-
son preceded him in death.
A celebration of life followed by a pot-
luck is planned for August 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
at the home of his daughter Shelley, 160 Lisa
Lane, Grants Pass. Please join us in remember-

Public Safety
Your article on Wed. Aug. 14 2013 about the response from
the OPS dispatcher is what keeps people from voting for a public
safety levy tax. There has been an attitude of “ we will punish
you if you don’t do as we want” since way back in 93, when
I moved here. I and my family are supportive of a strong and
honest public safety dept. I would like to point out that once
the Grant Pass City council voted to pay for jail space, one of
the first arrested was a hungry person who stole something to
eat from a store. Now I don’t condone that, however, to arrest
that person cost the taxpayer a bundle. Why could the police not
have taken him to a kitchen or mission to get him some food?
Why does the Jo. County Sheriff spend hundreds of thousands to
save some animals (which in my opinion most were not THAT
bad off) and if they were that bad a .22 would take care of them,
just like we do to sick or dying animals on the ranch. Put out a
sign FREE TO A GOOD HOME!! and let people come get them.
Why waste time, money and resources on such a non priority
thing. Yet a missing person dies because “WE DON’T HAVE
RESOURCES”. I saw a county deputy pull over a long time
decent resident in CJ, 80+ years old, for going to slow! The prob-

I have seen so many more problems and dangers posed
by the METH HEADS than anything else in this county. They
are the main issue behind most of the burglaries and petty theft
crimes. I remember supporting the construction of a new jail. We
were told then, that it would be so much more efficient, could be
run by way less manpower and save the county a bundle. So we
voted for it. Now of course its another issue. Why can’t the com-
missioners, which there have been many since I moved here in
1993, come up with new ideas to fund our safety? What’s wrong
with a small county sales tax, specifically and only for public
safety? ALL will have to pay, even the criminals, they eat, smoke
and drink don’t they? They are consumers too. I’m tired of this
attitude that the property owner has to foot the bill for every darn
expense.

GRAVEYARD TOUR
The Josephine County Historical Society is
once again presenting its popular Graveyard
tour on Saturday, October 19. The event will be
held in the Oddfellows/Masonic cemetery off
Foothill Boulevard.
Once again the Living History Players will
take you on a journey into the past. Come and
listen as the pioneer stories come alive. Char-
acters long forgotten will entertain and amuse
you, as they retell the stories of Grants Pass’
beginning years. Many of our ghosts are found
here in the cemetery, while some others are just
visiting for the night. Either way they will edu-
cate you about the history of our town.
The Graveyard Tour will have two tours;
at 4:00 and 6:00pm. Advanced tickets will be
$10.00 for the first person, $5.00 for each ad-
ditional person. Tickets at the gate are $10.00
each person. Family discounts will be avail-
able. Advanced tickets can be purchased online
at www.jocohistorical.org or in person at JCHS
Research Library, 512 SW 5th Street.
