TALENT TIME ALREADY?
The 2013 Talent Show will once again be held during the
I.V. Lions Labor Day Festival. The Festival is scheduled for
August 31 – September 2. Those who plan to participate in
the Talent Show have only a few weeks more to prepare and be
ready for the “Big Show”. (This event is for amateurs only.)
Last year’s contest was GREAT and the performers provided
entertainment for all. It was obvious that they all worked hard
preparing for the contest and the level of talent in this wonderful
Valley of ours is amazing. Last year’s winners were:

Intermediate Division-Megan Blakenship
Adult Division-Lori Buttram
We are looking forward to another big TALENT SHOW

Sheriff Encourages Neighborhood Watch
First off, a Thanks to Sheriff Gil Gilbertson, I can’t
imagine doing a job like he has with the amount of support he
gets. Many of us know we need to step up, organize, and do
what we can to work together on this. Not only with Neighbor-
hood Watch, but with wild fire prevention as well. Judy Hoyle
asked me if I was the Watch Coordinator for the Valley. I said
no, just for my neighborhood, but I’ll do what I can to get us
together and support a process, build a campaign and help us

I’m planning for a Town Hall or Neighborhood Assem-
bly for possibly Tuesday, August 13th or the 20th. Contact your
neighbors, have one of them contact me and we can work out
the details. Then publish it in the next issue of I.V. News, with
Dan’s help. I can’t tell you in the few words, how good it feels
to have your neighborhood working together and taking care of
each other. You don’t want to miss this experience and the sense
of security it brings. We can solve these problems if we spend
the time needed in getting to know each other and work in a co-
operative wa y.

About three weeks ago, an article in the I.V. News de-
scribed that although the Josephine County laid off approxi-
mately 100 employees, MOST of them were from the Sheriff’s
Office. MOST of them. So, to the County Commissioners,
all the following services are vastly more important than OUR
PUBLIC SAFETY! Clearly the priorities of the County Com-
missioners are royally screwed up. OUR safety is the LEAST
IMPORTANT service to them. Anyone can check out the Coun-

It’s very difficult to find exactly what the County spends
money on and how much, after some time searching on the Jo-
sephine County website I managed to find this list, but because I
can’t read spreadsheets sideways in tiny font, the below is a gen-
eral list. I didn’t have the hours I needed to find out especially
what all these funds do, but all these services are, according to
the “wisdom” of the County Commissioners, much, much more
important than funding the County Sheriff’s office to protect
OUR safety. Also noteworthy is that many of the functions the
county did not cut at all or very much could be carried out by
volunteers or private groups.
According to the article in the I.V. News a few weeks ago,
the Commissioners’ own salaries and benefits and all their staff,
cars, offices and so on were not cut AT ALL.
I’m including this list so that people reading the newspaper
can see how many functions of the County government were
much more important to the Commissioners than our public
safety. They cut the Sheriff’s Office beyond the bone - they
didn’t even leave Sheriff Gilbertson a whole skeleton to work
with - and barely touched other functions that we can all easily
live without, or volunteers can pick up the slack.
I appreciate Sheriff Gilbertson’s and the other employees
of the Sheriff’s Office efforts, to do whatever they can do, con-
sidering that the Commissioners have offended their office and
indeed, every citizen in Josephine County, with their budgetary
insanity.
Shame on the County Commissioners! Shame on you
all for depriving our Sheriff’s Office with funds to
work with to protect the citizens of Josephine County!

Cave Junction City Councilor and veterinarian Dr. Daniel Fiske, DVM was found dead in his office at Crossroads Animal Hospital the morning of Tuesday, July 30.

nightgown; everything was a loss and
no insurance. Tammy has a place to stay
for now, but is in need of so many basic
things. Two local bank accounts have
been set up for those that would like to
donate and many donation cans are out in
the community.
We are putting together a Community
event to benefit Tammy in her time of
need.
Saturday August 10th we will hold an
all-day community benefit starting at 8
a.m. with a car wash put on by many teens
of the Valley, along with a huge bake sale
from bakers throughout our community
and a silent auction of some very nice
items donated from folks. And then in
the early afternoon we will host a benefit
concert to help raise funds so desperately
needed. Some of the best in local music
are helping; headed up by John Nolan and
J. Barley and many others!
