Raised Concrete
Medians
in Cave Junction
The Oregon Department
of Transportation (ODOT)
will begin work on a new
traffic signal at 199 and River
Street and improvements
to the mid-block crosswalk
between Lister and Watkins
Streets on Monday, June 6.
These combined projects are
scheduled to be completed
before the end of October.
ODOT has devoted two hours
to explain the five-month,
$641,000 set of projects to the
public during it’s June 2 open
house at Cave Junction City
Hall between 4:30 and 6:30
PM.
I encourage all interested
citizens of the Illinois Valley
to attend this important open
house. ODOT representatives
will be there to answer questions
and discuss the project and will
have the opportunity to learn
local citizen’s perspectives on
the project’s many aspects.
These aspects include not
only the installation of a long-
awaited new traffic signal at
River Street and movement of
the existing River Street amber
light to the crosswalk between
Lister and Watkins Streets, but
also the reduction of traffic
lanes, creating left-turn lanes,
and construction of raised,
concrete medians on 199 near
River Street.
These
changes
are
one of ODOT’s periodic
improvements to Highway
199, our life-blood connection
to goods and services, and
we are grateful to have the
highway that makes commerce
possible and brings business to
our town. At the same time,
many in the community have
said that some of the proposed
changes, particularly the
raised-medians, will restrict
traffic from one side of the
highway to the other and
discourage access to business
by motorists in the opposite
lane.
Whether it’s “proper” in the
eyes of the state of Oregon or
not, the community has grown
accustomed to turning left to
access business and to return
to the highway. This is part of
our way of life and considered
economically important by
many local businesses. The
inability to turn left in Cave
Junction will make accessing
services tedious and move
highway traffic onto city
streets, decrease safety in our
neighborhoods, and increase
burden on local infrastructure
and law enforcement.
We have to keep in mind
that ODOT is thinking about
traffic safety and improvements
from the state level. It’s
understandable
that
our
community’s concerns are not
obvious to them. It’s important
for us to attend the open
house, be clear and respectful,
and communicate with our
state-level partners about this
important project. Our input
can make a difference.

Corrections
In last week’s issue dated May 25, Illinois Valley High School teacher Steve Mor-
gan was incorrectly identified as Mr. Murphy in parts of the article “IVHS teacher
steps aside.” The Illinois Valley News would also like to clarify that Astoria is not
located in the Willamette Valley as the story presumed.
Clarification: In the May 25 edition, Illinois Valley High School scholarship awards
included an award from the Illinois Valley Lions Club.
In the May 18 edition, the story “Pet Parade a joy for children, organizers” incor-
rectly listed Nalita Baumback as an employee of the Siskiyou Community Outreach
center. She is Center Supervisor for Early Head Start in Cave Junction. Additionally,
a quote misstated a statement from Baumback regarding a Dome School group. The
Illinois Valley News regrets the errors.

Weather Spotter Training Offered in Cave
Junction - The National Weather Service office
in Medford is inviting weather watchers to a free
weather-spotter training program. The session
is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 23rd, at
the Illinois Valley Senior Center, 520 E. River
Street in Cave Junction. The weather service
uses reports collected from spotters across the
region to determine the severity of storms. Ryan
Sandler, from the weather service office, will
discuss the kinds of storms that occur on the
Southern Oregon coast during the summer. He
will demonstrate how to measure precipitation
using a rain gauge, and how and when a weather
spotter reports to the weather service. There is
no cost for this class and those attending who
do not have a rain gauge will receive one after
completing the class. All members of the
general public are invited to attend and the
NWS will be recruiting new weather spotters.
For more information or questions about the
weather spotter program, contact Ryan Sandler
at 541-776-4303 #223 or e-mail ryan.sandler@
