Peter Willis Isenagle
Peter Willis Isenagle, of Cave Junction,
Oregon passed away on Thursday, April 28,
2011. Peter moved to Cave Junction in May
1973 from Palm Springs, California.
Peter Willis Isenagle was born June 30,
1937 to Cecil & Pauline (Honey) Isenagle in
Palm Springs, California. He graduated from
Palm Springs High School in 1955 and later
attended Orange Coast College. Peter married
Sheila Russell, also of Palm Springs, in 1963.
Peter & Sheila had three children: Shanti,
Aaron, and Joshua. While in Palm Springs,
Peter worked for General Contractor Francis
Markley building homes throughout The Desert.
Seeking a healthier environment in which to
raise their children, they moved their family to
Cave Junction in 1973. Fully embracing their
shared passion of Health through Nutrition,
Peter & Sheila created and operated “The
Natural Foods Store” in downtown Cave
Junction from 1973-1978. When The Natural
Foods Store closed for business, they continued
to operate The Natural Foods Co-Op so they
could continue helping Valley families access
affordable organic nutrition. Following another
passion of education in a nurturing & supportive
environment, Peter & Sheila founded and served
as directors of “Beaver Meadow School,” one
of the original alternative schools in Oregon.
Peter often taught History, Social Studies and
Literature to students of The School. Peter and
Sheila later divorced in 1983, but remained
the closest of friends until Peter’s passing. In
addition to The Natural Foods Store and Beaver
Meadow School, Peter worked as a carpenter
around the Valley. In his later years, he and
his son, Aaron, co-founded Southern Oregon
Fiber Company (SOFCO) to promote the use
of fibrous plants as an alternative to trees in the
making of paper products. He and Aaron also
DJ/co-hosted “Breakfast With Herb & Bud” on
Free Radio Takilma.
Though the last several years of Peter’s
life were physically challenging, his love of
intellectual pursuits was never yielding. He
remained a spiritual guide and moral compass
to many who looked up to him. He loved to stay
on top of the environmental and political issues
of the day on and was always up for a thought
provoking conversation. Peter peacefully
passed from this life to his next existence on
April 28th, 2011 at his home in Cave Junction.
Memberships & hobbies include Free Radio
Takilma, Natural Foods, Environmental Issues,
Politics/Current Events, watching Sports.
A potluck Celebration of Peter’s Life will
be held at The Dome School on Saturday, May
14, 2011 at 1:00 PM. Those touched by Peter’s
heart & spirit are welcome to attend.

So many caring, concerned,
proud folks here in Cave
Junction. I can’t wait until the
next time we meet up again
to share in caring for our city.
If there are others that are

Clean-up
Cave-Junction-Day
On Saturday, April 30th, I
was fortunate to be involved in
the Clean-up-Cave-Junction-
Day organized by Ann Padgett.
My friend Patricia and I were
assigned the weedy planter
on the corner of Redwood
and Caves Hwys. It was so
heartwarming to see so many
citizens of CJ turn out to help
with weeding and trash clean-
up.
I would like to thank each
and everyone of you. I also
want to thank Judy, the owner
of My Place, for the free cup
of coffee and support of this
project.
On Sunday I met with
Ann Padgett, and we finished
weeding the corner. Once
again, Judy, from My Place
came out and offered me
lunch and gave me a cool,

Presidential Critic
Demagoge- “A rabble
rouser, an agitator. A politician
who appeals to emotion and
prejudice.”
I expect in the new
dictionary there will be a
picture of Barack Obama. He
is following his mentor Saul
Alinsky, the author of “Rules
for Radicals” with precision
and intention.
He keeps haranguing the
evil rich because they don’t
pay their fair share. The top
5% income earners pay 60% of
the taxes. What is fair? 80%?
90%? And because many
of these “evil rich” employ
millions of people, is it likely
they will grow and employ
more when confiscatory taxes
are stealing the fruits of their
labor? What about companies
like GE led by CEO Immelt, a
FOO (Friend Of Obama) that
makes trillions of dollars and
pays NO income taxes because
the tax code is minipulated to
favor those the administration
likes.
What about the evil rich
FOO Bill Gates or FOO
Warren Buffet, or even former
presidential candidate FOO
John Kerry? These folks not
only pay far less taxes than
those that make considerably
less money, they have legions
of tax accountants and attorneys
and lobbyists to create or find
loopholes in our antiquated
tax code. When John Kerry
wanted to buy a new million
or so dollar yacht even he went
out of his high tax state to buy
it. Ex presidential candidate a
tax dodger, just like our Sec’y
of Treasury which is over the
IRS, FOO Timothy Geitner.
If we had a president that
wanted gas prices to go down
it would be easy to do. Just
announce he was going to
attack the problem with the
same enthusiasm as Obama did
sending aircraft and missiles
into Libya. A president that
thinks that drilling offshore by
America was more important
than giving our tax dollars
Brazil to do just that. And this
president would support the
agencies that give permission
to drill in the gulf, or Alaska,
or anywhere else in America
to bring down prices and
create milliions of jobs. That
president would act instead
of talk. He or she would not
form commissions to study
problems so their findings
could be ignored.
It is difficult to understand
why Obama seems to be
determined to intentionally
turn our country into a socialist/
democrat state like Europe.
Capitalism is the unequal
distribution
of
wealth,
socialism is the equal
distribution of misery.

To Whom
It May Concern
I read with interest, and
some concern, the recent
Commissioner’s
Corner
article in the IV News, and the
perception set forth regarding
the
county
relationship
with
Southern
Regional
Economic Development Inc.
(SOREDI). In my opinion,
the commissioner omitted
some very important context
of the good work SOREDI
has performed in Josephine
County and southern Oregon in
general. I have some personal
experience to share on behalf
of SOREDI.
In my capacity as a small
business counselor in the
Illinois Valley, I was able to
rely on the professionalism and
positive approach of SOREDI
to secure targeted counseling,
financial resources (loans and
loan preparation assistance),
marketing, and general small
business support for my clients
at no charge from SOREDI. I
have also worked directly with
SOREDI to build partnerships
and teamwork in my current
management position. Starting
and growing a small business
in a rural community is an
extreme challenge – it is
through the efforts of groups
like SOREDI that we in the
small business community
can gain valuable professional
experience, connections, and
support, which we, otherwise,
cannot afford.
Headquartered in Medford,
SOREDI is a leader in
developing and nurturing
economic
partnerships
among private, community
and public entities. Their
mission and goals include
collaboratively
building
employment opportunities in
our region, diversifying our
local economy, and promoting
the creation of local jobs
with true living wages and
benefits. Regionally, SOREDI
administers
a
Business
Development Loan Fund
that has provided 189 loans
totaling nearly $14 million.
Eighty eight of those loans
and over $6 million of those
funds have gone to businesses
in
Josephine
County.
Josephine County’s population
comprises 28.62% of Southern
Oregon,
but
comprises
44.94% of SOREDI’s loan
portfolio. Further, SOREDI
manages Enterprise Zones for
Southern Oregon, processing
applications and helping
businesses qualify. Businesses
may be eligible for 3 – 5 years
of property tax abatement for
critical improvements. As of
2010, all of Josephine County
is included in the Rogue
Enterprise Zone, a merger
of the Grants Pass Area and
Josephine Champion zones.
Since 1997, 24 businesses
have qualified for benefits,
some more than once.
SOREDI also serves a
marketing function for our area,
with activities such as trade
show attendance and calls on
national site consultants that
take the “Relocate to Southern
Oregon” message on the road,
while print advertisements,
direct mailers, events and
invitations entice others to
come here to visit. Southern
Oregon Visitor’s Association
and the six-county Southern
Oregon Marketing Team are
a few examples of effective
marketing partnerships.
What
about
results?
Since 1997, $55,356,000 in
new investments, 911 new
jobs created, 24 businesses
approved for E-zone benefits
as a result of Enterprise Zone
activity managed by SOREDI
– all in Josephine County.
My hope is that our
two
remaining
county
commissioners can get up to
speed quickly in their quest to
gain real business acumen, and
can fully utilize these existing
strong relationships with
groups like SOREDI – we in
Josephine County need ALL
the assistance available to help
us compete and grow.
