Ok, we’ve talked about design-
ing your birdhouse and building your
birdhouse. Now it’s time for putting up
your birdhouse. Here are some tips for
you think about.
• Try to face your birdhouse
north or east to avoid overheating in
the spring and summer.
• Face your bird house away
from the prevailing winds of winter.
• Have water and food avail-
able.
• Do not place birdhouses to
close to bird feeders.
• If you birdhouse is light
enough, mount bird house on metal
poles rather than nailing them to trees
or hanging them from limbs. Houses
on metal poles are less vulnerable to
predators. Be careful about the weight.
You don’t want to bend your pole.
• Birds can be a bit choosy in
their future home. Some will inspect
several houses before deciding on a
particular one. You may wish to give
the birds a few different decorative
birdhouses to choose from, knowing
that only one will be occupied.
• It may take a year or two for
birds to move in. (Be patient grass-
hopper) If they don’t after two years,
change its location.
• Don’t forget to place your
birdhouse where you can easily watch
it from indoors and enjoy all the ac-
tion.
You can also attract several spe-
cies with careful planning:
sight of one another.
• Keep about 100 yards between
bluebird houses and 75 yards between
swallow houses.
• Use no more than four nest
boxes/birdhouses per acre for any one
species of small birds such as wrens or
chickadees.
• Use no more than one nest
box/birdhouse per acre for any one spe-
cies of large birds such as robins.
• If you put up more than one,
keep houses well separated and out of

My Place Café adds dinner hours

At the end of February, My Place
Café opened in downtown Cave Junc-
tion in the building where Michelle’s
café used to serve breakfast and lunch
to Valley residents.
After getting off to a roaring start,
the café is now serving dinner on week-
ends and is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday and Saturday.
Judy Thomas, a former Michelle’s
employee, opened My Place Café in
hopes of providing another choice for
Valley residents.
“Since I couldn’t get a job any-
where else, I bought myself a job,”
Thomas said. “We need more restau-
rants in the [Valley].”
Thomas said she thought the res-
taurant would start slow and gradually
gain more customers, “easing” into
business. Instead, Thomas said the
community response was far beyond
what she anticipated.
“The people of this community
made it happen,” Thomas said. “It’s the
good folks working here [at the restau-
rant] and the people in the community
who are supporting us.”
Thomas hopes that opening a res-
taurant will help provide jobs that have
been missing for so many residents.
She said she’d been looking for work
for three months and thought this was
an opportunity to employ more people
in the area. Thomas said making food
fresh from local ingredients was also a
priority.
“If it’s not on the menu I’ll make
it for them [anyway],” Thomas said.
“I want to keep [the café] simple and
small. I want people to eat and have a
good time.”
Thomas said she added dinner
hours when several customers said they
were running out of dinner options. Af-
ter about two weeks, it seems to be get-
ting an equally strong response.
“I want to provide a homey, com-
fortable atmosphere and feed people
good food,” Thomas said. “If it wasn’t
for the people of this community I
wouldn’t have a job.”

was that it occurred on a sab-
bath day, which made cer-
tain religious leaders upset.
This healing became a sign
of a deeper truth, however;
that spiritual seeing and un-
derstanding is even more im-
portant than physical sight.
The former blind man
came to believe in Jesus as
his Messiah. He remains a
sign and promise that many
other people -- who may see
very well with their physical
eyes, yet are deficient in spiri-
tual sight and understanding;
they too may come to faith
in God through Christ Jesus.
