The event was held at the Deer Creek Center in Selma, a change from past years where it was held at the Junction Inn in Cave Junction. Marty Hertler won Citizen of the Year and Out n’ About Treesort won Business of the Year. Other individual nominees were Carol Dickson, Roger Brandt, Michelle Binker, Harry Johnson and Alicia Thornhill. “They were all well-deserving,” said Chamber of Commerce Office Manager Dulcie Moore. “Any one of them could have been a winner and it would have been a good thing.” According to Moore, Hertler has volunteered for 20 years to make sure the chamber’s Christmas tree is decorated and stays lit all through December. According to Lukas, at least 140 people showed up Saturday, but the total was likely close to 200. Hosted by the Spiral Living Cen- ter (SLC), residents at the fourth annual Skill Share demonstrated skills such as seed saving, com- post making, crocheting, raising goats and bicycle repair. Specific workshops at 10 a.m., 1:30 and 3 p.m. were set up in the rooms outside the main community center for residents to get a close-up look at practical skills from their neighbors and friends. “Our goals are to help the Illinois Valley share skills that promote sustainable living,” said SLC Executive Director Debbie Lukas. “It’s to enrich the family as well as the community.” In a more difficult financial cli- mate, Lukas said families are trying to become more self-reliant, canning their own food, raising animals for meat and other sustainable practices.
