CJ City Council holds monthly meeting

In a short but busy meeting
Monday, March 14, the Cave Junc-
tion City Council approved a liquor
license for an upcoming change in
ownership of Nacho Mama’s, ap-
proved two park-use requests and
discussed a financial report and audit
for fiscal year 2009-10.
Jenessa King applied for a li-
quor license in a change of owner-
ship, where Nacho Mama’s in Cave
Junction will change its name to Dos
Gringos. Council members voted in
favor of the Oregon Liquor Control
Commission (OLCC) license request
5-0.
Jacquelyn Doney from the Sis-
kiyou Community Health Center
recently asked for permission to use
amplified sound at the Illinois Valley
Child’s Fair and Pet Parade set for
May 7 at Jubilee Park.
In the application, Doney said a
portable P.A. system would be used to
announce contestants and Pet Parade
winners. Council member Margaret
Miller showed support for the request,
saying the parade is well-received by
the community, and the council ap-
proved the park use request.
Council members also approved
an amplified sound request for the Il-
linois Valley High School alumni re-
union at Jubilee Park July 3.
Each year, IVHS Alumni and
Friends traditionally hold a breakfast,
silent auction and membership meet-
ing. The group requested to use a

Passenger injured
in Rockydale

Sommer Sunday Turner was arrested
Monday, March 14 on charges of DUII and
assault IV after a car crash on Rockydale
Rd. left a man injured.
According to a Josephine County
Sheriff’s Office incident report, Dennis
Alan Knight Sr. was taken to the hospital
after a car was believed to have crashed
into a tree.
The report said the vehicle was
heading towards Hwy 199 on Rockydale
on the left side of the roadway, stopping
on the driver’s side with the back of
the trunk against a tree. Two people
were pinned inside the vehicle and one
woman reportedly refused transport.
Illinois Valley Fire Department
personnel also responded to the scene
at about 8:45 p.m. Fire Prevention
Officer Kamron Ismaili said seven IV
units were dispatched and that the case
was later turned over to the Sheriff’s
Department.
The case is still under investigation,
and Turner reportedly had a blood
alcohol content (BAC) of .11 at the
time of the accident.

Council members also approved
a request from the Cave Junction Li-
ons Club to waive an occupational tax
for the Culpepper and Merriweather
Circus planned for May 23.
In the request, CJ Lions Club
member Nina Horsley wrote that city
council members had previously al-
lowed a permit without cost for the
circus in 2009. She also said the Junc-
tion Inn allowed the club to use the
parking lot next to the restaurant for
setting up the circus.
After monthly council updates,
Michael Cavallaro from the Rogue
Valley Council of Governments (RV-
COG) presented a financial report on
cost-saving measures in the last few
years.
The RVCOG is an association
of government agencies in Jackson
and Josephine County with programs
in community development, trans-
portation planning, land use plan-
ning, senior and disability services
and several others.
CJ woman busted
for mushrooms

A Cave Junction woman was arrested
early this month in Nebraska in what drug
enforcement officials said was one of the
largest seizures of hallucinogenic mush-
rooms in recent history.
Cave Junction resident Vanessa Dean,
along with Kyle Rettstadt of Portland, was
arrested for possession of a controlled sub-
stance with intent to deliver following a
traffic stop on March 2. Police said that
they seized nearly 160 pounds of Psilocybin
mushrooms during the arrest.
According to a police report filed by
Officer James Vaughn of the Omaha Police
Department, Dean was observed following
another vehicle too closely on Interstate 80. The
report also said that officers “observed numer-
ous signs of criminal activity.”
After the stop, an officer requested con-
sent to search the 1995 Toyota 4-Runner that
Dean was driving, but was denied.
Another officer, along with his K-9, “Ko-
bie,” was then brought to the scene to do a free
air search which resulted in a positive indica-
tion of drugs. After the search of the vehicle, a
total of 319 freezer bags of suspected psilocybin
mushrooms, totaling 159.5 pounds, were found
in the rear cargo area and luggage carrier.
DEA Agent James Wahale said that he
would have “no comment until the case is
closed.”
Calls to Dean’s attorney and the local
prosecutor have not been returned.
