Cook staff and vol- unteers devoted their time to cooking a full meal for guests, who lined up al- most out the door at peak serving time. Next door in the gym, Lorna Byrne’s Marimba Band, led by director Brice Cloyd, started out the eve- ning’s entertainment, fol- lowed by Hawaiian hula dancing and a Grants Pass 4-H dance group. “We wanted to get the community to come to the school and see what we’ve been doing,” said Ever- green principal Dave Va- lenzuela. According to Valen- zuela, the volunteers serv- ing food were central to the evening’s success. Just some of the food avail- able was teriyaki chicken, dumplings, enchiladas from Carlos Restaurante and handmade sushi rolls from food service director Michael Morris. Morris is director of food services for the Three Rivers school district, and said he’s been in the food service industry for some 40 years. Evergreen has hosted Multicultural Night for three years, and a Cin- co de Mayo celebration the years before. Just a few of Morris’ list of duties include man- aging and planning menus, overseeing the purchase of ingredients, managing employees, scheduling deliveries and catering to schools in the district. But Morris still found the time to demonstrate su- shi-making Thursday for Multicultural Night. “I think it’s a great way to expose some of the people who might not have the money or the pal- ates to different types of food,” Morris said. “I do it because I enjoy being around people. Cooking is my livelihood; I love it.” After eating, guests slowly filed into the gym to watch elementary and middle school-aged stu- dents in the Marimba Band, the first act onstage. Band director Brice Cloyd said it was the group’s first performance this year. Parents, students and friends also chose between various arts-and-crafts ac- tivity booths staffed by teachers and volunteers, giving them a taste of Spain, France and Italy. Morris said Thurs- day was the fourth time he’s attended Evergreen’s celebration, something he loves to do regardless of his busy schedule. “My Dad always told me, if you want to eat and (Photo by Darcy Wallace, Illinois Valley News) you don’t want to open Evergreen Principal Dave Valenzuela helps out as guests sample food made by many a box of Top Ramen or volunteers and cooking staff. The staff from Carlos Restaurante also brought food on macaroni and cheese, you Thursday, March 3. better learn how to cook,” Morris said. The best thing about cooking, Morris said, is being able to put a smile on someone’s face without having to say a word. “I try to do some- thing different every year [for Multicultural Night],” Morris said. “I like to try and break it up a little bit. I like to do demonstra- tion cooking to give them something to watch, it’s a little more exciting.” Congratulations on a fantastic year. 0085 Weather Watch Cave Junction
