Wednesday, March 9, 2011 IVHS Equestrians have strong showing By Darcy Wallace IVN Staff Writer Illinois Valley Equestrian athletes continued to raise the bar at their second weekend tournament March 4-6, with several students placing near the top of the rankings. According to equestrian coach Desiree Eddy, scores are averaged with the results from previous meets, so this week’s placements also take the first meet into account. Illinois Valley’s in-hand obstacle relay team, which placed fourth in the Feb. 4-6 meet, fell to fifth overall over the weekend. It’s still an impressive ranking out of 27 total teams. Though teammates Lorraine Schlabach, Jessie Rollins and others are seasoned competitors, others are learning on the fly. “Oscar [Flores] had to ride a new horse and had just a couple of hours with him,” Eddy said. “But he ran a 19-second barrel run which is impressive in our area.” Eddy said freshman Meghan Flores placed 15th in the in-hand classes while Schlabach placed seventh. Despite her inexperience, Eddy gave credit for placing in the top 15 during her first year competing. “Meghan did really well in the in- hand classes as well as [Schlabach],” Eddy said. “Meghan is a freshman and learning as she goes. [Schlabach] has done this for two years.” Weekend-long equestrian meets, with many activities held all over the arena, take plenty of setup and time commitment not just from students, but also from parent volunteers. According to Eddy, Illinois Valley equestrians had to rush from one end of the arena to the other right after finishing one event, barely making it in time for the team birangle. Despite the hectic rush, IV teammates fared well in the event. “Mali [Whicheloe] and her partner Jessie [Rollins] ran a 28-second team birangle run,” Eddy said. “The announcer said IV was well worth the wait.” Eddy said parent volunteers are crucial for the team’s success, helping clean up and reset after events, keeping equestrians fed and sticking by them all through the weekend. “It takes lots of dedication to get through these meets,” Eddy said. “They spend eight hours running from arena to arena. They’re jogging next to them, feeding them…they’re there all three weekends.” Illinois Valley equestrians are equally grateful for their parents’ help and try to do what they can to contribute, Eddy added. “I know I couldn’t get anywhere without the parents’ work this year,” she said. Snow in the days before the meet also threw a wrench in Illinois Valley’s practice plan, making it nearly impossible to find dry land to practice drills on. Eddy said the team hopes to compete at the State level in the keyhole event and in in-hand relay. “The kids are really pushing for State,” Eddy said. “The kids are practicing as much as they can. We literally practiced…in a foot of snow.” Illinois Valley students are scheduled to compete again Friday through Sunday, April 15-17 at the Jackson County Expo. It was George and Gracie, Lone Ranger, etc. Families would gather by the radio to listen for their favorite program. And when War of the Worlds came on, a whole nation stopped, and wondered. What if aliens had really landed in a field? The power of radio. Well times have changed, with high speed internet you have a whole world of music and news to choose from. So maybe this is why TakilmaFM.com is getting forgotten, so many choices. But I don’t forget, I remember Dr.Demento, Wolfman Jack, the love of a great DJ! Someone who comes in live, with vinyl, new music, news and observa- tions and spins it for you, live on the airwaves. A DJ that spends hours, for the love of music, hand-picking a set to play, for a whole world to hear and enjoy. Or perhaps a live band, or a speech played live on the radio, like maybe a Dome School event, or the Barter Faire or Hemp Expo. While TakilmaFM is not pirate anymore we still do it old schoool. Not automated, no censors, and Free Speech out the yin yang. It’s for this love of music, that I’m a DJ, and hope to remind everyone that it is only with donations we stay on air. We have no paying ads or underwriters, or grant money like big stations. We only have YOU! So I hope you’ll choose to put us back on your playlist via the internet.
