I do have some fish that I haven’t seen in a few
weeks. I don’t know if they are hibernating or worse
— a meaningful meal for one of the local cats I see
roaming around some days.

and March Madness. However, I don’t have satellite
service, so I only get one and sometimes two channels
on my digital rabbit ears. This has forced me to spend a
lot of time reading, which is always a good thing.

I have to question the
respect and love that Perpetua
professes for its community
and the earth beneath its “feet”
when I hear of its determination
to
spray
herbicides
very near Lake Selmac.
According to the Northwest
Coalition for Alternatives to
Pesticides, one of the herbicides
Perpetua is going to spray,
Atrazine, has been banned
in Europe, Canada and other
countries. Why? Because it
has been shown to cause breast
and prostate cancer, it disrupts
the hormone system, it causes
babies to be born underweight
and with birth defects, it delays
puberty, and causes genetic /
chromosomal damage that can
be passed to three generations.
Triclopyr
can
cause
breast cancer and genetic
damage called dominant lethal
mutations, it damages the
kidneys, it’s highly toxic to
fish, it decreases the survival
of bird nestlings, it inhibits the
growth of mycorrhizal fungi
– the very fungi vital to the
growth of plants and replanted
trees, it’s mobile in the soil
and
contaminates
wells,
streams, rivers, and yes, lakes.
These are just two of
the planned herbicides. No
one wants to talk about
any combinations of these
chemicals. The EPA and ODF
won’t protect us. They’re
waiting for the bodies to stack
up first, whereas Europe and
Canada take the precautionary
approach by erring on the
side of safety of their people,
children, pets and wildlife.
What’s wrong with us to
allow this assault and what’s
wrong with Perpetua to
ignore the science, side with
the corporations and hurt all
of us? Stop this madness.

Basic military training has been completed by U.S. Navy Sea-
man Harold R. Wilson III at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois.
Wilson is the son of proud father Harold R. Wilson Jr. of Cave
Junction, Oregon. He is a 2002 graduate of Illinois Valley High
School.
He now leaves for San Diego to take his place among the ranks
of heroes aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson.

The Spiral Living Center and the Selma
Center will present the fourth annual free Selma
Skill Share at the Selma Center, 18255 Redwood
Highway (Highway 199), in Selma, from 10AM
to 4:30PM on Saturday, March 19. An addition
to the event this year is the inclusion of a Garden/
Craft faire with booths from local producers
and non-profits will be held in the Community
Center’s ‘gym’. Locally made articles for sale
at the Faire will include mohair yarn, Alpaca
products, local homemade bread and other items.

“The Mid-Valley Monarchs” girls’ basket-
ball program will be holding try-outs/sign-ups
for spring & summer teams. The program is de-
signed to help players who wish to pursue more
