Boys lose in shootout against Rogue River By KEVAN MOORE IVN Staff Writer The boys soccer squad at Illinois Valley High School lost a heartbreaker Saturday against Rogue River. Nonetheless, Coach Gary Enoch was extremely proud of his team’s effort in what he called “a classic confronta- tion” that saw two overtimes before the Cougars lost 3-2 in a shootout. “Our two teams have very different styles,” he noted. “They are a strong, fast team that comes at you in waves whereas we tend to be a controlled tempo team with a lot of passing and ball movement to create opportu- nities.” And, the Cougars cer- tainly held their own. “We had a great opportu- nity to put it away late in the second OT, but it didn’t hap- pen,” Enoch noted. “It was one of those things where we had a really good opportunity to score, but just couldn’t get any good contact with the ball. I was overjoyed with the effort and thought we played incredibly well to put our- selves in a position where we could have won that game.” In fact, Coach Enoch was so impressed with their effort, that he said, “my guys played the best soccer game I’ve ever seen at Illinois Valley since I’ve been here.” Coach Enoch said that’s especially impressive since IVHS has so many freshmen and sophomores as major contributors. “Rogue River, like so many other teams I’ve seen in this league so far this year, are top-heavy with seniors,” he said. “We on the other hand are riding a bunch of young horses.” Sophomore Jovany San- chez scored both of Illinois Valley’s goals in the game. The first came in the third minute to put the Cougars up 1-0 and the second came in the fifty-second minute to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars, who are now 3-6 overall, were set to face Hosanna Christian out of Klamath Falls on Tuesday and will next play at 10 a.m. on Saturday at home against Glade High School.
