Following the loss the Cougars moved to 2-4-0 while Cascade Christian Challengers moved to 4-1-0. Despite the loss, IVHS Head Coach Ray Yarbrough was pleased with his team’s efforts, especially in the second half. “We won the second half which is what we asked our guys to do at the half- time break,” Yarbrough said. “There’s absolutely no shame in losing this one. Cascade Christian is a great football team and has been a great football team for years, including when they recently won a state champi- onship.” The Cougars’ chances appeared promising in the early stages. “We started out pretty strong and recovered an on- side kick and drove down and scored just a couple of minutes into the game,” Coach Yarbrough noted. “Their running game just break, the Cougars trailed 29-7. “But, our kids played tough in the second half and we put ourselves back into position for a win,” “We won the second half which is what we asked our guys to do at the halftime break,” Yarbrough said. ended up being too strong for us, though as the half wore on.” Going into the halftime Yarbrough noted. “A two- point conversion, at one point, would have put us in position for a win.” Things just weren’t meant to be, though. None- theless, Yarbrough was proud of his squad. “Playing well … there’s no shame in that,” he said. Coach Yarbrough was especially proud of junior kicker Killian Mazity. In addition to the opening kickoff, Cougars special teams were able to recover a second on-side kick and came very close to capturing two others. Junior receiver Tyler Robbins also had a big night, catching seven balls for over 150 yards and two touchdown receptions. The Cougars two wins so far this season came in a 24-18 win over Coquille High School and 34-21 vic- tory over Glide High School. The Cougars are now set to travel to Chiloquin High School for a 7 p.m. start against the Panthers this Friday, Oct. 15. Boys’ soccer squad wins big By KEVAN MOORE IVN Staff Writer The boys’ soccer team at Illinois Valley High School won in a landslide last Tuesday when they played Canyonville High School at home. The final score of the game was 12-0 in favor of the Cougars who moved to 3-5 on the season. “I think the final score may have indicated more of where they are in their sea- son than where we are, but I hope it gives some indica- tion of where we are at this point in the season,” said IVHS Head Coach Gary Enoch. Leading scorers for the Cougars were sophomores Jovany Sanchez and Jason Meichtry, who each logged three goals apiece in the lopsided win. Coach Enoch put cer- tain conditions on his team in the second half to slow things down a bit, including a rule that no shot could be taken until everyone with an IVHS uniform had at least one touch on the ball. “One of the things that I really did like about the win, is that we had seven differ- ent people score which is something we’ve really needed,” Enoch said. “We’ve really tried to spread out our scoring op- portunities.” The boys were sup- posed to face off against Gold Beach High School on Tuesday, but the game was cancelled because GBHS couldn’t field an entire squad. The Cougars’ next game will now be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Rogue River High School. The Lady Cougars beat New Hope Christian at home this past Thursday by a final of 3-0. With the win, the girls moved to 4-7 overall on the season. Senior captain Alex Miller had 28 digs and went on a serving spree in the final game to lead the Lady Cou- gars. In addition, senior Kayla Johnson had 16 kills and Amy Weaver had nearly ten blocks at the net. “I was really happy with our play,” noted IVHS Head Coach Cathy Pope. “We don’t normally get to try dif- ferent positions with the girls, but we actually had the op- portunity in this match to get girls in positions that they don’t normally play.” In addition, coach Pope said that everybody on her bench got a chance to play. “We wanted to see dif- ferent leadership roles within the team and see how they could uphold themselves with different scenarios on the floor,” Pope said. “They actu- ally all did really well.” In particular, Pope said that senior Hailey Parker who normally would get some playing time in the back row, and is one of the team’s short- est players, got to move up on the floor against New Hope. “She didn’t get any blocks, but was able to pull some tips out,” Pope said. “She knows the positioning of where she needs to be and did a really nice job for us.” Senior Lucy Bell also stepped up. “She got to play at some positions she wouldn’t nor- mally be in and I think she surprised herself and sur- prised some of the rest of us,” Pope said. The Lady Cougars were set to travel to St. Mary’s in Medford on Tuesday and the team has a bye on Thursday.
