Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010 Cougars move to 2-3 after loss at Bandon By KEVAN MOORE IVN Staff Writer The Illinois Valley High School football squad lost a close one to Bandon this past Friday by a final of 27-37 to move to 2-3. “In order for us to win, we needed to capitalize on every opportunity and we IVHS Activities Calendar brought to you by the folks at 541-592-3556 Cave Junction 541-471-7487 Grants Pass 541-469-7545 Brookings 541-773-7487 Medford THURSDAY, OCT. 7 * Cross Country at Creswell Co-Ed @ all day * Volleyball vs. New Hope JV girls @ 5:15 p.m. Varsity girls @ 6:30 p.m. FRIDAY, OCT. 8 * Football vs. Cascade JV boys @ 4 p.m. Varsity boys @ 7 p.m. SATURDAY, OCT. 9 * Volleyball at Lost River JV girls @ 12 p.m. Varsity girls @ 1:30 p.m. TUESDAY, OCT. 12 * Soccer vs. S. Medford Varsity girls @ 4 p.m. * Volleyball at St. Mary’s JV girls @ 5 p.m. Varsity girls @ 6:15 p.m. just didn’t do that,” said IVHS Head Coach Ray Yarbrough. “We just didn’t play with as much intensity or a sense of urgency as we have been before.” For instance, Coach Yarbrough noted that IVHS dropped nine balls on of- fense and missed three chances for interceptions on defense. Bandon came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and set up a 14-0 lead. After that, IVHS quarterback Roger Hults was able to wiggle out of a sack and find receiver Zach Anderson for a deep touchdown pass. A flag on the play, which probably took 15 to 20 sec- onds to develop, came on a late facemask against Ban- don and was applied in the ensuing kick-off. IVHS tried an on-side kick but was unsuccessful and Bandon moved down the field to go ahead 21-7. The Cougars then scored a touchdown on a 40-yard screen pass from Hults to Curtis Paulson and eventu- ally tied things up in the third quarter with a one-yard scamper from Anthony Becker. “It really looked like things were starting to roll again,” Coach Yarbrough said. “It’s hard to even say where things went south.” Bandon went on to get a field goal, connected on a touchdown pass where I.V. missed tackles and then scored a final touchdown. The Cougars got one more touchdown before the final horn on a 12-yard pass from Hults to Tyler Robbins with about a minute left to play. The Cougars will play their first league game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Cascade Christian at home. “I think we match up really well against them,” Yarbrough said. “We’re gonna have to play a great football game against them, capitalize on every opportu- nity and come in strong. I would say that the winner of this game has a really good chance of making the play- offs and possibly being league champion. Even though it’s the first game of the season in our league, I would say that’s how impor- tant it is.” Because October is breast cancer awareness month, all proceeds from program and ticket sales will go to cancer research and fans are encouraged to wear pink. Curves will also be setting up a booth with baked goods and other items to help support cancer re- search. Cougars volleyball will face New Hope Christian at home on Thursday, Oct. 7. Lady Cougs soccer squad falls to Glide By KEVAN MOORE IVN Staff Writer Despite a loss, the Lady Cougars soccer squad showed remarkable signs of improvement on Saturday. The Lady Cougars held Glide High School to just two goals in the first half on Saturday before losing by a final of 6-1. Considering that the final score after their first encounter a few weeks ago was 14-1, IVHS Head Coach Dick Matti was pretty pleased. “We heard some com- ments from them on their bench midway through the first half saying, ‘Is this the same team?’ And it was. Our same exact players pro- gressed from being very green and inexperienced to being better athletes and soccer players. We just weren’t prepared to play them before and this time we were in just a much bet- ter frame of mind to play them on Saturday,” Matti said. This time around, junior forward Stephanie Agee scored for IVHS in the 60th minute of the game on an assist from senior center- midfielder Kieran Rose. The Lady Cougars are now 1-5, with their lone win coming against Del Norte on Sept. 23 here in Cave Junction. The girls were set to play against Cascade Chris- tian in Medford on Tuesday of this week. The next chance to catch them in ac- tion after that won’t be until Tuesday, Oct. 12 against the South Medford junior var- sity at home. And, Coach Matti said that should be a good contest. “Starting from a rela- tively young and very inex- perienced squad, we have just made tremendous strides this year,” Matti said. “They’ve become much more physically fit, im- proved their skills tremen- dously with the soccer ball and are playing much better as a team with tactics on the field. They seem to really be enjoying it and have really come together as a team.” (Photo by Dan Mancuso, Illinois Valley News) Edilet Rodrigues had a hair-raising experience de- fending her goal during the girls home loss to Rogue River High School on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
