Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010 Deer Creek chardonnay wins award This cluster of grapes was found hanging on the vine, soaking up the sun and build- ing up its sugar level in preparation for harvest some time next month. It is one of countless clusters found throughout the Illinois Valley, where vineyards have be- come a booming industry throughout the past decade. (Photo by Dan Mancuso, Illinois Valley News) By SCOTT JORGENSEN IVN Staff Writer An Illinois Valley vine- yard has been honored for the excellence of its 2007 chardonnay. Deer Creek Vineyards in Selma won a silver medal at the World of Wines com- petition held at the end of August at Del Rio Vine- yards in Gold Hill. Owner Kathleen Bryan, who acquired Deer Creek earlier this summer, said the award will create marketing opportunities for the vine- yard. “A lot of people don’t know that Deer Creek ex- isted,” Bryan said. “We’re going to do things differ- ently. We’re under new ownership, and we’re really trying to be a part of the community.” Deer Creek’s was the only chardonnay to win an award out of the 106 wines submitted for the competi- tion, Bryan said. She added that it was also the first time that any offering from Deer Creek had been submitted for award consideration. A tasting room and wine bar have been added to Deer Creek, Bryan said, and massages are being offered on-site. Bryan said she also plans to get the product into stores and restaurants. Linda Donovan from Palette Wines in Medford is the new winemaker at Deer Creek, and Bryan is thrilled about that. “We’re hoping to have more award-winning wines,” she said. Although grape harvest is still a couple of weeks away, Bryan said it should be larger than expected. Aside from Deer Creek’s chardonnay, pinot gris and pinot noir, the tast- ing room also carries other Southern Oregon estate wines and Oregon micro- brew beers.
