Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 Page A-5 Gubernatorial candidate Greg Kord visits Grants Pass By SCOTT JORGENSEN IVN Staff Writer He may not be a former governor or professional basketball player, but Con- stitution Party candidate Greg Kord is determined to make his presence felt in Oregon’s gubernatorial elec- tion. Kord, a resident of Troutdale, kicked off his first statewide trek on Thursday, Sept. 16 with a trip to Grants Pass. “This is all new to me,” Kord said. “I’ve never been in politics before, and never wanted to be.” Like many people, Kord said that his involvement was prompted by what he describes as the “slide” of Oregon and the entire nation into a state of eroded free- dom and prosperity. “I can’t sit by and do nothing anymore,” he said. Kord first came to Ore- gon in 1991, and works as an industrial piping de- signer. He is a married 58- year-old with six children, and has a bachelors degree from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. In 2000, Kord joined the Constitution Party. Prior to that, he had been a Re- highest office, Kord said he would adopt policies to en- courage more logging, ranching, farming, mining and fishing, oppose more taxes, advocate for smaller government and institute an independent audit of the state treasury. Kord said his top prior- ity is to re-establish the state’s sovereignty from the federal government and nul- lify any legislation that is unconstitutional. “Our rights are being violated by the federal gov- ernment every day,” Kord said. “It’s time that the states start fighting back.” National Guard troops from Oregon who are cur- rently fighting overseas should be brought back home to help local sheriff’s offices combat marijuana grows on federal land, Kord said. “That is a priority for me,” he said. “That’s what they’re supposed to do — protect the state.” On Sept. 25, Kord will appear at a League of Ore- gon Cities forum in Eugene along with Republican gu- bernatorial candidate Chris Dudley and Democrat John Kitzhaber. Two arrested in GP bank robbery Two Grants Pass resi- dents have been arrested and charged with robbing a bank on the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 20. According to the Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety, employees of the Umpqua Bank on Midland Ave. phoned police at 2:17 p.m. The employees reported that they had just been robbed by a female who provided a demand note, then fled on foot with cash from the bank. Officers searched the immediate area for the fe- male but were unable to locate her. No one was in- jured during the robbery and no weapon was used. An alert citizen ob- served a suspicious vehicle in the area at the time of the robbery. The citizen pro- vided police with a descrip- publican. Six months ago, Kord met with Bob Ekstrom, vice -chairman of the Constitu- tion Party of Oregon. Kord said that he ex- pected Ekstrom to suggest that he run for a city or county office. Instead, Ek- strom urged him to run for governor. After much delibera- tion, Kord threw his hat in the ring, although he cau- tions that, “I’m not doing this for me.” “My focus is on Ore- gon, the situation we’re in and what needs to be done,” Kord said. Further investigation lead officers to the home of 19-year- o l d Joshua Deeter Tseu, who was also de- tained without incident. Investigators determined that he helped plan the rob- bery and drove Anderson from the scene. Tseu and Anderson were interviewed, then lodged at the Josephine County Jail on charges of second-degree robbery and first-degree theft. Anyone with informa- tion about the incident is asked to contact the Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety at 541-474-6370.
