Here's what you can do to avoid causing Oregon’s next wildfire: “If fires are allowed where you will be camping, and you choose an undevel- oped campground, here are a few suggestions to ensure that your campfires will be safe. *When selecting a site for a campfire, avoid areas near buildings, fallen trees, tree trunks, or low overhang- ing branches. *Scrape all leaves and litter away down to bare earth for at least 5 feet on all sides of the fire. Dig a pit in the center of this circle and sur- round it with rocks. *Build your campfire downwind and at a safe dis- tance from your tent. Never leave it unattended, and after you light it, throw your match into the fire. If any sparks escape the campfire, have a shovel or rake handy to sup- press them. “When it’s time to leave the campfire and head to bed or back to town, make sure you put the campfire out -- Dead out. “*Drown all embers, sticks, and coals, especially those that might have fallen under the rocks. “*Stir the coals to make sure that all heat has been removed. “*Drown the area again. “Remember that wildfire prevention is your individual responsibility. Be alert to weather conditions, especially wind; and always be careful with fire. “Leave your fireworks home -- they don’t belong in the forests.” Joanie Elaine Hardie Selma resident Joanie Elaine Hardie, 69, died June 17, 2010 in Grants Pass. extensively throughout the Sierra Nevada consulting with many experts. If not welcomed, they were to say publicly that even the dust on their feet would be wiped in protest against them, and, “Yet know this: the king- dom of God has come near.” Also, “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” So it is for us. IS IT EDIBLE? - What appears to be a Western Gray Squirrel was entranced perhaps either by the promise of food from a picnic lunch, or by seeing his reflection in the camera lens wielded by Anno Bakker, of Holland. Bakker and his wife, Jo, were hosted by Cave Junction residents Jack & Valerie Brown last week at Oregon Caves National Monument. The Browns met the couple during a recent trip to Holland, and their overseas friends came to visit during their motorhome tour of the western U.S. (Photo by Valerie Brown) Do you know the difference between education and experience?
