Candidates for Josephine County commissioner will gather to face questions and offer views during a forum co-sponsored by Illinois Valley News and Illinois Valley Chamber on Thursday, March 25 at the Josephine County Bldg. in Cave Junction beginning at 6 p.m. LAST WORDS - “If you scratch any cynic, you’ll find a disappointed idealist.” (George Carlin) (Continued from page 2) wanna-be’s are running for his position. Seriously, why would anyone vote for a car mechanic or a school bus driver to manage a multi- million dollar budget? Like many area business and civic leaders, I’m voting for Dave Toler’s many years of management experience, and his demonstrated perse- verance and vision. We don’t need any more loose cannons in this county. We need leadership. Encourages statesman-like political campaigning From Simon Hare Cave Junction Election season is upon Josephine County, and if his- tory has taught us anything, it is that political competition has the potential to bring out not only the best in candi- dates, but also the worst. I respect anyone willing to sacrifice personal time and energy to give back to their community, but I would en- courage today’s candidates to learn from the past mistakes of others and rise to a higher level of statesman-like politi- cal campaigning. I, for one, will not par- ticipate in, encourage or con- done the personal attacks and “mudslinging” that have plagued past elections. Like many, I am interested in hear- ing about the issues that face this county and what each candidate has to offer as a solution to challenges we face currently and in the future. I hope this election season will determine a new generation of leadership for the next gen- eration of Josephine County. Jack Brown seen as a ‘real’ Conservative From Lorraine Rafferty Selma I am of the opinion that no real Conservative would run for commissioner against Jack Brown, who is for a mat- ter of fact a real Conservative. Real Conservatives pull on the same side of the rope. One of a Kind Josephine County Public Health (JCPH) has confirmed that a second fox tested posi- tive for rabies in the Cave Junction area in February. The first was confirmed positive in January. Both foxes were found dead. Officials want residents to be aware of the rare risk of rabies from foxes or other wildlife. A more common disease with similar clinical and be- havioral signs in foxes, rac- coons and skunks is canine distemper. It is only infec- tious to animals in the canine and weasel families, accord- ing to JCPH. The fox that died in Janu- ary was confirmed to have been infected with a bat strain of rabies. Foxes, coyotes, rac- coons, or skunks may also come into contact with domes- tic animals and put them at risk for contracting diseases like rabies, canine distemper, or an untimely death because they may become prey. Health officials ask the public to leave wildlife alone in their natural habitats and to report any sick or dead wild animals to the nearest office of Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. In Oregon, the last fox that tested positive for rabies was 10 years ago in Jose- phine County. Jackson, Curry and Coos counties also have had cases of foxes testing positive for rabies. Of the 72 sick foxes submitted for testing after showing clinical signs for rabies or distemper from 1990 to 2009, 26 percent (19 out of 72) have had con- firmed rabies. Of the bats that were submitted sick or dead and tested from all parts of Ore- gon during the same period, 9.9 percent (160 out of 1,631) have had confirmed rabies. For more information on rabies go to oregon.gov and search rabies, or phone JCPH in Grants Pass at 541-474- 5325; ODFW Health Lab at 866-968-2600; or the Oregon Dept. of Human Services at 971-673-1111. McCaleb ranch bridge closed The Rancheria Bridge that crosses Illinois River at McCaleb Ranch on the U.S. Forest Service’s Wild Rivers Ranger District has been tem- porarily closed to all motor vehicles until further notice due to public safety concerns. A recent engineer’s site visit discovered that there are numerous missing and rotting planks on this low-water bridge that will require repair prior to the bridge reopening, said the forest service. Repairs cannot occur until the river level drops and velocity decreases enough to allow workers access under the bridge later this year. Bar- ricades will be placed on For- est Road 4103 087 to warn the public of the closure. Jack was the first candi- date to file for the 2010 com- missioner race against Dave Toler, who is most certainly not viewed as a Conservative. Recently several other candidates have filed; some claim to be Conservative. Again I assert that no real Conservative would run against Jack. He has all of the qualities of a real Conserva- tive and an excellent chance of winning this election. In light of his great quali- fications and convictions any real Conservative would get behind him and pull on the same side of the rope, rather than run the risk of splitting the Conservative vote. But alas, wedges are driven and the battleground divided in many ways. How shall we stand if we are divided? Brown is the sort of guy who will fight for our rights. Who will pull with him and who will pull against him? Forest Edge Farm and Nifty & Gifty Thrift Saturday, March 6 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Immanuel United Methodist Church 200 W.
