By Verne & Patty Hyland
Of all the Biblical exam-
ples of the husband-father role,
Abraham stands out most viv-
idly. “He commanded his
household.” (Gen. 18:19).
There was no oppression in that
type of commanding word.
Abraham had a way of making
his family sharers of his faith.
Abraham, the “Friend of
God,” set us a worthy example.
His was a life of prayer. He had
a strength that allowed him to
love his family as Christ loved
the church.
Abraham wasn’t a perfect
man, but he was a great man,
and his greatness was shown by
his leadership in his home.
The Seventh-day Adventist
Church celebrated an entire
weekend of Love at Home fo-
cusing on families and the bond
they share.
Sunday evening, Feb. 14,
“Love Never Fails” was the
theme for the Sweetheart Ban-
quet in the fellowship hall on S.
Old Stage Road in Cave Junc-
tion. Several older children
served delicious raspberry
punch as the couples arrived at
the candlelight dinner.
After Pastor Verne’s wel-
come and prayer, the couples
came to the buffet for lasagna
with side-orders of peas and
corn, crusty garlic bread, and
various tossed salads. Waiters
and waitresses served delightful
raspberry crepes and strawberry
cheesecake for dessert.
During dessert, Patty
Hyland awarded coupons to
many couples. Some advised a

Retirement has
three phases.
Will you succeed in
all of them?
10-minute healthy foot or back
massage to the spouse; another
suggested a special meal at their
favorite restaurant; yet another
proposed that the wife write a
love letter and put it under her
husband’s pillow or in his
lunch; and another advocated
an afternoon at a park with a
favorite picnic lunch. All cou-
pons were designed to bring
couples into closer, more loving
relationships.
The meal was followed by
a widescreen showing, “Love
Never Fails,” presented by Kim
Bowlby. The popular DVD
“Fireproof” also was shown,
which left not a dry eye in the
room. The message of an un-
selfish Godly, true love was
etched on each heart that night.
A favorite Bible scripture of
Pastor Hyland, “And walk in
love, as Christ also hath loved
us” (Eph. 5:2 ) was shared.
Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church
In Luke, Chapter 4, we
read of Jesus in the wilderness
for 40 days. While there he
fasted and was tempted by the
devil. Jesus refused all, and
said, “Do not put the Lord your
God to the test.” The devil then
departed.
What is the lesson for us?
Are we tempted every day? Do
the things of this world seem
more important than those that
await us in Heaven? Do we
sometimes lose our way and
forget how to resist these temp-
tations?
Perhaps if we don’t rely on
our own abilities to resist the
devil, we can succeed. Perhaps
if we place our faith in Jesus,
the one who was confronted by
these same temptations, we will
realize the real strength we have
to resist.
