Santa Claus visited Cave Junction on a chilly Saturday night, Dec. 5 during the Illinois Valley
Chamber of Commerce’s annual tree lighting on the lot adjacent to the Junction Inn. Santa had
candy canes for the kids and hot cocoa and cookies were offered. Singers with the Illinois Val-
ley High School Choir (above) lent their voices to the festivities.

Lovejoy Hospice kicked off its annual “Light Up A Life” celebration
with singing and remembrances at Home Valley Bank on Thursday,
Dec. 3. Participants wrote the names of departed loved ones on
ornaments which hang on the Memory Tree. The tree will be on
display through Dec. 30, with blank ornaments available for those
who would like to honor special people in our lives. (Above)

Grant opportunities available
Nonprofit organizations
throughout Oregon which
respond quickly and thought-
fully to current issues and
events shaping our world
have a new opportunity for
funding.
So said Oregon Humani-
ties (O.H.), formerly Oregon
Council for the Humanities,
in seeking requests for Re-
sponsive Program Grants
(formerly Opportunity
Grants) for up to $1,000.
To download the Re-
quest for Proposals and find
out more about how to apply,
visit oregonhumanities.org.
Proposals are reviewed
monthly, and decisions are
made by members of Oregon
Humanities statewide volun-
teer board of directors.
Responsive Program
Grants fund activities that are
not part of an organization’s
standard programming.
“Instead, these grants support
programs created in response
to pressing, current issues or
events locally, nationally, or
internationally that the appli-
cant organization is uniquely
situated to help the public
explore,” O.H. said.
Although proposals for
all kinds of program formats
are welcome, special consid-
eration will be given to pro-
grams that are “interactive in
nature” and that aim to bring
together diverse groups of
Oregonians.”
For more grant informa-
tion, contact Jennifer Allen,
O.H. director of programs, at

A sense of humor... is needed armor. Joy in one's heart
and some laughter on one's lips is a sign that the
person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life.
