As Opposed to the “Day-rates”? with Bob Quinn Nitrates have nothing to do with the cost of drilling your well after dark, but the pres- ence of higher nitrates in your ground water well would be the cause of some concern. Actually, nitrates occur naturally in both surface and ground water when nitrogen reacts with oxygen or ozone. High levels of nitrate in drink- ing water are a concern for in- fants and pregnant or nursing women. The source of elevated nitrate levels may be fertiliz- ers, septic systems, feed lots, industrial or food processing wastes. Decaying organic mat- ter in some geologic settings can also be the cause. In the majority of our drilling area, nitrates are not a problem. Elevated levels of nitrate in your well would show up in the standard test required for wells which includes Flow Rate, Bacteria, and Nitrate. Heating or boiling water which contains nitrate will not remove this compound but will more likely concentrate it. Spe- cialized treatment systems may remove nitrate from your water supply and these would include ion exchange, distillation, and reverse osmosis.
