Board of Directors ad-
dressed during its Thursday,
Nov. 12 board meeting at
district headquarters on
Caves Hwy. included:
*Heard an update from
Deputy Chief Jeff Gavlik
regarding recent recruitment
efforts. Gavlik said that
IVFD has received six ap-
plications for firefighting
recruits and two additional
support applications. The
district is in the process of
conducting background
checks on the applicants,
Gavlik said, and added that
he hopes to get the recruits
into training within the next
two months.
*Approved the annexa-
tion of several properties
into the district. Those prop-
erties are located at 116
Crooks Creek Rd., 1660
Thompson Creek Rd. and
15 Beebe Dr. Also annexed
was a larger piece of prop-
erty located on Thompson
Creek Rd. and owned by the
Illinois Valley Soil and Wa-
ter Conservation District.
*Received a report from
Medford-based certified
public accountant Richard
Brewer regarding his audit
of the district’s finances.
Brewer praised IVFD’s
use of internal controls, and
gave the district a “clean bill
of health” for its fiscal man-
agement practices.
“The overview is posi-
tive in almost every way,”
Brewster said.
IVFD’s next board
meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, Dec. 10.

Nitrates #8...
As Opposed to the
“Day-rates”?
with Bob Quinn
Nitrates have nothing to do
with the cost of drilling your
well after dark, but the pres-
ence of higher nitrates in your
ground water well would be
the cause of some concern.
Actually, nitrates occur
naturally in both surface and
ground water when nitrogen
reacts with oxygen or ozone.
High levels of nitrate in drink-
ing water are a concern for in-
fants and pregnant or nursing
women. The source of elevated
nitrate levels may be fertiliz-
ers, septic systems, feed lots,
industrial or food processing
wastes. Decaying organic mat-
ter in some geologic settings
can also be the cause. In the
majority of our drilling area,
nitrates are not a problem.
Elevated levels of nitrate in
your well would show up in
the standard test required for
wells which includes Flow
Rate, Bacteria, and Nitrate.
Heating or boiling water
which contains nitrate will not
remove this compound but will
more likely concentrate it. Spe-
cialized treatment systems may
remove nitrate from your water
supply and these would include
ion exchange, distillation, and
reverse osmosis.

the Oregon Ground Water As-
sociation and owner of

Pump Service at 6811 Wil-
liams Hwy., Grants Pass. As

tion and service that began
more than 50 years ago, these
columns are provided by the

out of well drilling and ground
water. If you have a question

mates, or helpful information
