Page 2 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 Faithful readers might recall my painful story of sev- eral years ago regarding my tremendous lack of me- chanical/building/fixing objects talent. But I type well. I have built a few items in the past. Some of them actually stayed together long enough to stand up before collapsing in a pile of twisted nails, oozing glue and sawdust. Some of us have no aptitude for such matters. Fortunately, my wife and three children all have engi- neer-type brains, and can figure out stuff. Good thing. Still, it took me years to let Jan take the lead after we’d buy an item and the box had the dreadful, fateful words (for people like me): “Assembly Required.” Yikes. I’d break into a cold sweat and start trembling. Not to worry though, as Jan has the genius to figure out any- thing. But I used to try first to “show her” how to do it. Perhaps a bit too much machismo? Didn’t work. Almost went to divorce court a few times over those “Assembly Required” items. Anyway, this brings us, strangely enough, to last week when we got some new light fixture shades. I can handle this project, I thought. So much for thinking. But wait -- I was able to get the tall ladder into the bedroom, climb it and figure out how to remove the glass shades to replace them with the fabric ones. It was exciting to be way up near the ceiling and discover that at least two of our four cats had climbed the ladder from the other side and were having some sort of Cat Game called, “Let’s Scare Dad by Shaking the Ladder.” They also enjoyed, “Try to Trip Him While He’s Climbing Down.” It took five separate ladder round-trips, with help from our herd of felines, to remove the old shades and bulbs. Then on my sixth excursion, I discovered that the new shades wouldn’t clip over the light bulbs because the bulbs were too large for the clips. Off I went to get new, smaller lights. Jan had me take one of the old lights to be sure I got a proper size. That was a mistake, as I thought of one dimension, and she was thinking three-dimensionally. Because although I got smaller bulbs, it wasn’t until I made another creaky trip up the ladder, with my cat escorts, that I realized the bases were too small. I had gotten bulbs with Christmas tree bases, when I needed bulbs with regular bases. Arghh. Off I went again for more bulbs. Could not find bulbs of the right wattage. Phoned Jan, who advised me to wait until the next day and try another store with more variety. That worked. Meanwhile, we left the ladder in our bedroom over- night. The cats loved it. Played games nearly all night. Next time, I’ll have them do the job. I’m sure they could handle it better than I. Did I mention though that I am a really good typist? * * * P.S. The day after the complicated installation pro- cedure we decided to put back the glass shades. And you don’t even want to hear about the problematical situation we encountered. It was because of my replac- ing the plastic rings for them so far down on the light base the day before that it took extreme dexterity and patience to remove them. But the mission was accom- plished. Again with help (she took over) from my wife. Some days life is just full of twists and turns. (Disclosure! Ideology trumps science From Gregory Anderson Cave Junction I never thought I would live to see the day that ideol- ogy trumps science. Until something is proven, it is nothing more than an idea or a theory. Obama and his fellow geniuses in Congress are feel- ing the pressure from realists throughout the world that man-caused global warming is the biggest con job in his- tory. Speaker “Polemic Pe- losi” was able to perform a “cram-down” to narrowly pass another bill that will cost our economy and our children and our grandchildren dearly. Again, before even one House member had an oppor- tunity to read the 1,300 pages of tripe. In fact it was re- ported that there was not even a copy of the legislation on the House floor when it was passed. Humming the tune of “Yes we can,” they are bring- ing the change we can believe in -- much to the detriment of our economy, our society, and our country. Remember the promise of transparency and 48 hours to know what is in a bill? That obviously never came to pass. That dis- appeared with our audacity to hope that our president was telling the truth. The Obama/Algore wor- shippers refuse to admit that they lose ground, as scientists and other skeptics become more educated to the real science. They need the ideo- logical fervor of the global- warming hucksters to pro- mote this rubbish. Currently more than 700 scientists dis- agree with the U.N. position on global warming. This is 13 times the number that au- thored their 2007 climate summary. Last year the newly elected government of New Zealand immediately sus- pended the weeks-old cap- and-trade program. The Aus- tralian Parliament is prepar- ing to kill its own carbon- emission scheme. This ex- plains why the Obama-Reid- Pelosi team is trying to jam the carbon tax ploy through before the voters learn of the real scientific facts. Recently, one of the fore- most experts on polar bears was “disinvited” from a con- ference in Denmark. Why? Because his knowledge and evidence runs opposite to the liberal group’s ideological beliefs. The EPA has been trying to suppress a study that shows there has been no global warming for a decade and that the CO2 levels are no- where near what they would have to be to be a danger to the planet’s inhabitants. The only danger is the cap-and- tax pushers causing huge out- sourcing of jobs and taxing the country to match Califor- nia’s fiscal destruction. This will make Con- gress’s corn ethanol fiasco -- which is producing higher food prices and lower gas mileage without affecting CO2 emissions -- look like child’s play. ‘Checking out’ business From Ellis Couron Cave Junction Last Saturday “Old Bud” pulled into a local business and bought some 30 dollars worth of merchandise and tried to pay for it with a per- sonal check that was from a banking establishment across the street. Then I discovered that this place of business had a check list, not of those who had written bad checks, but of only the trustworthy and al- lowed to write checks. I asked how did one get his name on that list, only to be told that no new names were being accepted when clearly I could see that there had been new names added at the bot- tom. Now, I don’t know who all is on that check list, but I have lived here for more than 30 years and have done most of my business with checks that don’t bounce, and I have bad feelings about anyone who apparently believes that my checks are not as good as someone else’s. And anyone who be- lieves that “Old Bud” will ever spend another nickel in that place of business is, as we say down in the Holler, “whistling up a gum stump.” Of rights & privileges From Raymond Ronald Karczewski© Cave Junction With regard to Christo- pher Smith, perhaps we can clear up the confusion which exists in our respective posi- tions. When I responded to his letter, I did not put a face to the name. I responded to words on the screen, words on the printed paper. I respect him as a man of integrity. My use of the word “ignorant” was not meant as a personal attack, but as a word denoting “unawareness” of facts existing beyond one’s understanding. I live by God’s Law, and Common Law; I recognize the U.S. Constitution to be a contract between the Sover- eign People and its Servant Government. My Unalienable Rights are derived from the Creator. The Right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The Right to Life includes the right to Self De- fense. The Right to Liberty includes the Right to Travel. No man-made govern- ment can rescind those rights. Such rights cannot arbitrarily be converted into privileges, as when one is told they must be licensed, must seek per- mission from government in order to travel from point A to point B via the normal travel conveyance of the day. In years past, that “normal travel conveyance of the day” was the horse. To- day it is the automobile. In Common Law, a crime is committed only when one damages another man or causes damage to another man’s property, or infringes upon another man’s rights. It is the Law of Re- sponsibility. If no Claim of Damage to another person or property, or infringement of Rights exists, no crime exists. That is Law. Unfortunately, modern- day man has been psycho- logically conditioned to think that victimless “Color of Law” legislation creates a crime when it does not. That is the illusion of law that ex- tracts power from the people and bestows it upon bureau- crats, legislators, judges, prosecutors, and policemen via a mountain of “corporate policy” masquerading as law. Such victimless offenses are founded in contract law, between corporate “persons.” It is gained by government through one’s consent, mis- guided or otherwise. Today’s modern-day courts are not lawful Article III courts, but operate as unconstitutional Administrative Courts which gain their power and control via Maritime Law, adminis- tering contract law. The aver- age tax-paying citizen is com- pletely unaware of the decep- tive system they support with their tax monies. I am a living, breathing, flesh-and-blood, sentient, natural man. I am not a “person,” a corporate entity as defined in the vehicle code. Therefore its rules and regula- tions, merely corporate pol- icy, have no jurisdiction over me unless I waive my rights or consent to them. The limited Administra- tive Court operating in Amer- ica today is based in Maritime Law, Contract law has no jurisdiction over me unless I grant it jurisdiction through my consent or waiver of Rights. The law states: “There, every man is inde- pendent of all laws, except those prescribed by nature. He is not bound by any insti- tutions formed by his fellow- men without his consent.” (Cruden v Neale, 2 N.C. 338 (1796) 2 S.E. 70.) It was after many years of ignorance, some as a po- lice sergeant carrying out the training provided by the Cor- porate State, that I under- stood the significance of binding oneself to a contract which on its face was invalid for lack of disclosure, that I took the measure of rescind- ing my license in 1999. Since I am not engaged in commerce since 1999 while using public roads, and I use them solely for travel, the Police Powers granted government via the U.S. Con- stitution to regulate commerce and traffic do not apply to me as a non-person in the ver- nacular of legalese as long as I do not commit a Common Law crime. I am a responsible man. I understand Smith’s concerns for the irresponsibility for the drunk driver who took his grandmother’s life, but even Smith must see that a license was irrelevant to the issue. It is only when man will act responsibly that our soci- ety will change. That is a tall order for those who have al- lowed others to do their “thinking” for them. God bless Holger From Ali Madjdi Grants Pass Holger Sommer inspired, infuriated and confused a lot of people in our county, where in some ways “Business as usual” has meant back-room dealings for more than a century. He wasn’t always right, or get the law right, or the right law, or win his appeals, but he was always there if there was so much as a whiff of chicanery in the air. On his own time and dime. A saint he wasn’t -- he had a big ego -- but a hero he was. A stickler for rule of law, Holger was a thorn on the side of legal tricksters. Holger Sommer reminded us all, that our county is still a part of America, the land of freedom and rule of law, though at times it may seem like Josephinistan. God bless Holger.
