Cemetery clean-up set May 16
Saturday, May 16 begin-
ning at 9 a.m. a volunteer
clean-up event will be held at
Laurel Cemetery, on Laurel
Road in Cave Junction. Ap-
proximately 60 volunteers
are needed.
The event is scheduled
as part of “Take Care of Ore-
gon Days” in connection
with the Oregon sesquicen-
tennial celebrations. Partici-
pants will collect trash, rake
leaves and pull weeds in the
cemetery, helping to prepare
the site for Memorial Day.
Volunteers are asked to
bring buckets, shovels,
nonelectric weed mowers,
rakes, wheelbarrows, lop-
pers, litter grabbers and
buckets. Volunteers with
pickup trucks will be needed
to haul away trash and gar-
bage.
The clean-up is being
coordinated by Illinois Val-
ley Grange 370 Community
Service Dept., which will
provide water, refreshments,
lunch, and gifts for each par-
ticipant.
Taylor’s County Store is
donating lunch meat; South-
ern Oregon Sanitation is
waiving dump fees; and
D&D Porta-Potty is provid-
ing services. Trash bags,
signs, safety vests and work
gloves will be provided by
the Oregon Lottery,
SOLV.org and Ore-
gon150.com.
By organizing the clean-
up and participating in the
May “Take Care of Oregon
Days” events, Illinois Valley
Grange 370 hopes to bring
attention to the cemetery and
gain support for continuing
efforts to keep the cemetery
clean and well-maintained.
The site is not a perpetual-
care cemetery and its board
relies on families to take care
of the graves and surround-
ing lots.

Selma Center gearing up for
Farmers Markets, Cycle Oregon

Since becoming chairman
of the Selma Community Cen-
ter’s Board of Directors last
November, Jim Tehan has
started to lay a foundation for
its future.
At the top of Tehan’s list
is making the facility, the for-
mer Selma Elementary
School, as self-sufficient as
possible. To do that, he has
increased efforts to rent sev-
eral of the rooms in the build-
ing to community groups.
“We want to do that just
enough that it pays the liability
insurance, heating and the
power bill,” he said.
Tehan also would like to
establish some savings for
capital improvements. The
center still is owned by Three
Rivers School District
(TRSD), but Tehan said that
body has “absolutely no
funds” for the building.
The TRSD Board of Edu-
cation recently approved a 10-
year lease for the facility. Te-
han hopes to someday change
that arrangement. “I’d really
like to get in a position where
someday we’d be able to buy
it off them,” he said.
In the short term, Tehan is
concentrating on the Selma
Farmers Market, which will
open at the center in June.
Tehan said that he would like
to establish a flea market and
other activities in conjunction
with the market.
Also being considered by
Tehan are ways to expand the
programs offered at the center;
establish monthly community
dinners; and improve the land-
scaping.
“I have a lot of things I’m
trying to do, it just takes time,”
he said.
But perhaps most exciting
of all is the fact that more than
2,200 riders from Cycle Oregon
plan to stay at Lake Selmac on
Sept. 15. Riders will represent
12 countries and all 50 U.S.
states.
“This is one of their favor-
ite rides in Southern Oregon,”
Tehan said.
Many area nonprofit or-
ganizations, including Selma
Community Center, will assist
with events, Tehan said. The
Illinois River Valley Arts
Council will handle hospital-
ity, he said, and the I.V.
Boosters Club will coordinate
meal service and toting lug-
gage.
“That will generate
around $6,000 for the Booster
Club for the kids of the Illinois
Valley,” Tehan said.
Aside from all that, Tehan
said that he plans to ask the
center’s board of directors
about possibly applying for
grants to help clear some of
the algae at Lake Selmac.
“It’s the only lake in Jose-
phine County,” he said. “It’s
the only safe place we’ve got
for youngsters to go fishing.”
A grant is being pursued
to help heat the center’s gym-
nasium, which also serves as
its performing arts center. And
auditions are being held for a
melodrama production.
Tehan said that he mostly
wants to make the center open
and inclusive to as many peo-
ple as possible.
“We’re really pushing
that we’re nonpolitical,” he
said. “This is for the people of
the community.”

Booster Club booth, a live
auction with the infamous Jim
Frick at the mike and more
surprises.
Booster Club members
will be present in support of
the night’s theme, “Show your
Spirit, Let’s Paint the Night
Red and White!” They will
have information brochures
available for guests, as well as
club members to answer ques-
tions.
“Joining us in showing
your spirit, by wearing red and
white, could result in a few
surprises around the room
during this event,” said Bob-
bie Loyd, Grad Night chair-
man.
“This year we will also
have a 20-minute live auction
at the end of the evening for
several larger items,” she said.
“This will be a memorable
event, regardless of the econ-
omy.
She further noted, “If you
do not want to join us for din-
ner, come for the auction.

Witnesses reported a commotion and ‘flaming bales of straw’ littering the roadway in the 1800 block
of Rockydale Road on Friday evening, May 8. The bales, a witness said, were thrown into the ditch
from the back of a pickup truck, presumably to prevent the rest of the load catching fire. Neighbors
pushed the bales back into the roadway, to stop the fire’s spread. Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD)

The operator of a red Honda motorcycle, Robert
Pope, 18, of Selma, was taken by Mercy Flights
helicopter to Rogue Valley Medical Center with
serious injuies on Thursday evening, May 7,
after he collided with a Ford passenger vehicle
driven by Jeff Combs, 55, also of Selma. Accord-
ing to OSP, Combs was stopped in the
southbound lane of travel on Redwood Hwy.

Dog rally at
lake May 16
The valley will be going
to the dogs this weekend.
Beginning at 8 a.m. on
Saturday and Sunday, May 16
& 17 at Lake Selmac’s Trout
Pavilion, Saint Bernard enthu-
siasts from several states will
converge with their animals for
a Saint Bernard Specialty,
Sweepstakes, and Jr. Show-
manship competition.
Additionally, there will be
All-breed Obedience Trials
and All-breed Rally Trials on
Saturday.
According to Cave Junc-
tion resident Karen Bodeving,
whose own Saint Bernards will
be among contenders, 73 dogs
are slated to compete on Satur-
day.
“The most fun to watch is
the All-breed Rally,” Bodeving
said. “It’s like a driver’s test
with your dog. The judge sets
up a course and the handler
and dogs have to do what the
signs tell them to.”
The public is welcome to
