‘Bob’ Perkins
Robert LeRoy “Bob” Per-
kins, 87, of Cave Junction, died
Monday, May 4, 2009 at a
Grants Pass nursing center.
A memorial service will
begin at 1 p.m. Friday, May 15
at Illinois Valley Funeral Di-
rectors chapel in Cave Junction
with Father Ron Nelson offici-
ating. Interment will be at Ar-
lington National Cemetery in
Arlington, Va.
Mr. Perkins was born on
June 8, 1921 in Washington,
Ind. to Roy & Anna Perkins.
He received a forestry degree
at Syracuse University in Syra-
cuse, N.Y. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran and served on the USS
Kaula, and the destroyers USS
Thornhill and USS Bernadou
during World War II. He liked
being known as a “Tin Can
Sailor” because of his service
aboard destroyers.
After his Navy discharge
he worked for the Fish & Game
Dept. in Redding, Calif., then
joined the California State
Parks Service working as a park
ranger in Soledad and at Hearst
Castle. He later worked as chief
park ranger at Santa Cruz Natu-
ral Bridges State Park; then
moved to Shasta and worked as
a chief park ranger with law
enforcement credentials.
After moving to Crescent
City, Calif. in Del Norte
County, he was in charge of
five parks from Crescent City
to Eureka. In 1982 he moved
from Crescent City to Cave
Junction, where he lived for 27
years.
He was a member of

He was a member of the
American Legion. His hobbies
included tinkering with auto-
mobiles, small engines and
things in his shop.
Surviving are two daugh-
ters, Loree Lawson, of Suther-
society. His hobbies included
flying, golfing and commercial
fishing for salmon.
Surviving are three daugh-
ters, Roberta Elkins, of Shasta,
Calif., Aleda Ely, of Redding,
and Sheri Mels, of Sacramento;
two sons, Matthew Perkins, of
Grants Pass, and Joel Perkins,
of Cave Junction; four grand-
children; and two great-
granddaughters.

resident Leslie James Buell Jr.,
86, of Roseburg, died Monday,
May 4, 2009 at a nursing center
in Roseburg.
A graveside service will
begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
May 13 at Deer Creek Ceme-
tery in Selma with Pastor
Monte Pope, of Selma Baptist
Church, officiating.
Mr. Buell was born on
Feb. 19, 1923 in San Francisco
to Leslie & Rosamond (Tuttle)
Buell. He married the former
Dolores Solomon 50 years ago,
and she preceded him in death.

Dr. Williard Regester was
guest speaker during the Sab-
bath worship service May 2.
His topic, My Testimony, was
interesting and inspiring. He
challenged everyone to spend
30 minutes in prayer each day
and more than two-thirds of the
congregation accepted. He has
held several seminars in Grants
Pass and hopes to hold one in
Cave Junction.

Juanita Kathleen Winton
Goforth, born in LeRoy,
N.Y. on Oct. 7, 1925 to
Vernon and Clara Goff,
passed to her rest April 7,
2009 in Fresno, Calif. at the
age of 84.
Juanita owned and oper-
ated the Sugar Pine Lodge
care home in Cave Junction
for 15 years.
She was active in the
Cave Junction Seventh-day
Adventist Church, giving
generously of her time in the
community services pro-
gram, which gives clothing
and food boxes to more than
135 people weekly.
Her love for children
brought her to help at the
Vacation Bible School each
year. She also served as Su-
perintendent of the Sabbath
School and taught some of
the children’s classes.
She had many hobbies,
one of which was her inter-
est in oil painting.
She leaves to mourn, her
husband, Howard Goforth,
of Fresno; son Delbert Win-
ton; daughter Deanna
Sandage, of Crescent City,
lin, and Rosie Cook, of
Kingsman, Ariz.; a son, Leslie
J. Buell III, of Etna, Calif.; a
brother, Jerry Buell, of Cave
Junction; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Rosamond
Buell & Leslie James Buell Sr.
