Library group ponders branch openings
Sunday, May 17 will mark
the two-year anniversary of
Josephine County’s libraries
closing.
Since then, Josephine
Community Libraries, Inc.
(JCLI), a private, non-profit
organization, has successfully
opened the main branch in
Grants Pass. But the question
remains as to whether or not
JCLI will be able to re-open the
county’s other three branches,
including the one in Cave Junc-
tion.
To bolster its efforts, JCLI
is engaging in a spring fund-
raising drive. It began on April
12, and will run until May 17.
As of Wednesday, May 6,
JCLI reported raising at least
$48,000, half of its goal of
$100,000.
The following day, Thurs-
day, May 7, the Josephine
County Board of Commission-
ers discussed a lease and grant
agreement for the Illinois Val-
ley library branch during its
legal meeting. The draft lease
agreement is similar to that
used for the Grants Pass
branch.
No specific action was
taken on the lease or grant
agreement, but Commissioner
Dave Toler, an Illinois Valley
resident, said it was encourag-
ing to see the issue come up.
“We pretty much ap-
proved what we’ve got. I think
we’re ready to move it through
a session to make it finalized,”
Toler said. “But the fact that
they wanted us to move this
through seems very promis-
ing.”
JCLI Board of Directors
President Doug Walker said the
group is coming closer to deter-
mining the parameters of open-
ing the county’s other library
branches.
“The issue is, a number of
the board members are willing
to plow ahead,” Walker said.
“But a number of board mem-
bers want to know that we’ll be
able to afford to open the
branches. It’s really hard to
know that ahead of time. As a
board, we have to have a bit of
faith in community support of
the libraries.”
Walker said that library
groups in the Illinois Valley,
Wolf Creek and Williams are
“putting extra effort into get-
ting more membership from
their areas to show sustainabil-
ity.”
“They’re doing separate
work, but in conjunction with
our spring drive,” he said.
For his part, Toler said he
plans to contribute $1,000 to-
wards the I.V. branch. Those
funds are left over from the
Rockydale Neighborhood As-
sociation, a group that was ac-
tive in the 1990s. Toler served
as its president for many years.
Toler said the association
has been inactive for the last
seven to eight years, but still
has around $1,000 left in its
account.
“I’m going to go and dis-
solve the account and ask that
the money be moved over to
the I.V. Library to help get it
open,” Toler said.
Re-opening the Cave Junc-
tion branch would provide a
tremendous benefit to Illinois
Valley residents, Toler said.
“For those of us who live
in the Illinois Valley, Grants
Pass is a long drive. It’s not real
convenient to have to go for
what can be anywhere from a
30 to 60-mile round trip to go
to the library,” Toler said. “I
think it will be a lot more con-
venient for the folks out in the
Illinois Valley to have a branch
out there.”
Since its inception, Walker
said, JCLI has made it a goal to
open every branch of the
county’s library system. He
said that is still the case.
“That’s what we’re shoot-
ing for,” he said.
To make a contribution to
JCLI, send a check or money
order payable to Josephine
Community Libraries to: P.O.
Box 1684, Grants Pass, OR
97528. Contributions can also
be made online at josephineli-
brary.org.
The Grants Pass branch of
the library is located at 200
NW C St., and is open Tues-
days and Thursdays from 4 to 8
p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sat-
urdays from noon to 4 p.m. It
is closed on Sundays and Mon-
days.
