Wednesday, May 6, 2009 Art Walk salute to Oregon Caves & Chateau on tap Friday “Salute to the Oregon Caves & Chateau” is the theme for the May 8 free Second Friday ArtWalk in and around Downtown Cave Junction from 5 to 8 p.m. Evergreen Federal Bank will display Karen Stiles’ painting which represents various milestones for the Oregon Caves National Monument. A special recep- tion will take place during ArtWalk from 4 to 6 p.m. at Evergreen’s Cave Junction branch to highlight the 100th anniversary of the monument. (Photo provided) Pow-Wow set May 9-10 in GP People of the Earth Foundation will present its 15th annual free Native American Arts Festival & Mothers Day Pow-Wow on Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10 in Riverside Park in Grants Pass. The event, part of the Amazing May celebration, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Along with drumming performances by Elk Thunder Drum and others, there will be singing and traditional men’s and women’s dance exhibitions. Fiesta America’s 4-H dance group and Lowicha also will perform. Food, arts and crafts booths will be open to the public, and there will be workshops on regionally available healing herbs and medicinal mushrooms. There also will be giant puppets, face-painting, 50/50 drawings and raffles. Grand entry will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday; noon on Sunday. Volunteers are needed, as are tepees, said organizers. There will be 33 doors repre- senting Oregon’s counties for the state’s sesquicentennial. In commemoration of the 1874 discovery of the caves by Elijah Davidson, Elaine Barker’s Illinois Valley High School art students will create a sidewalk chalk drawing, “Follow the Bear,” at the Jo- sephine County Bldg. The free ArtWalk Kidspace activity from 4 to 6 p.m. at the county building will be, “Make Your Own Mother’s Day Card,” led by Annie Norton and sponsored by the I.V. Section of the Boys & Girls Club. The I.V. Visitor Center will welcome Mike McDer- mott, IVHS Class of 1959. He will discuss the creation of his spectacular dollhouse, an 80-pound replica of the three-story Chateau at Oregon Caves. The dollhouse will be displayed until raffled during the July 4 weekend as a fund- raiser for the I.V. Alumni & Friends Scholarship Fund. Jan Walker will be avail- able to sign copies of her new field guide, Shrubs of S.W. Oregon, written in collabora- tion with Max Bennett, for- ester with OSU Extension Service. Landscape plants, many native to the area, will be available. This month’s Featured Artist, Roger Robinson, will show his imaginative, whim- sical pictorials at Taylor’s Country Store. Also, Hum- boldt County Country rocker Kent Stephensen will demon- strate why he’s a favorite around the region. The menu will feature Halibut Hollandaise with Shrimp, as well as regular menu items. Farther south, Subway Restaurant will host “Escape from Berkeley” alternative- fuel rally winner “MAX.” Designer Jack McCornack and Sharon Westcott, of Illi- nois Valley, drove the super- efficient DIY prototype from Berkeley, Calif. to Las Vegas, Nev. and won the $5,000 prize. Safe House Alliance will host a miniworkshop on photo com- position, “Tips and Tricks,” by Daniel Emery from 6:30 to 7 p.m. only. Emery will lead weekend photography workshops at the Chateau later this year. Mary Reynolds, of Jefferson State Financial Services, will be showing her new creation: framed miniature glass bead “quilts,” as well as her ele- gant bead jewelry.
