golf are going fast.
Reduced rates also have
helped drive up visits to the course,
Kennedy said. A nine-hole game
costs $10, and 18
holes of play cost
$15, with carts
not included.

who
have volunteered
to help maintain
the facility. He
said that commu-

members
have
demon-
strated much dedication to keeping
the course open.
“We seem to be getting more
volunteers by the week,” Ahlers
said. “I think the interest is there.”
He added that golfers have
been coming from throughout
Southern Oregon to hit the links at
I.V. Golf Course. Many plan to
return, he observed.
“We need to entice people to
play, and we’re doing that,” Ahlers
said.
Although he anticipates the
course being put back on the mar-
ket at some point, he said that its
current volunteer-run model seems
to be working out quite well.
“I think over the short-term,
it’s going to be fine,” Ahlers said.
“If the volunteers last, the course
will last. We can make it on a vol-
unteer basis.”
Kennedy said that she remains
optimistic about the

It wasn’t that long ago that a
building boom hit Cave Junction,
and included Illinois
Valley Golf Course as
its centerpiece.
Ambitious plans
were made to expand
the course to 18 holes,
with three subdivisions
wrapped around it.
Then the housing
market went bust —
and the expansion plans
fizzled out completely
— with lots still empty
and occasionally filled
with rainwater.
The course was in escrow, but
that fell through in August 2008,
prompting the facility’s closure in
November. Another offer was
made for the course last December,
and subsequently withdrawn.
But the course reopened six
weeks ago, and has been run by
volunteers since.
Suzie Kennedy is among the
volunteers keeping the golf course
open these days. Kennedy worked
at the course for three years, but
said that she is willing to give up
some of her time to try and keep it
afloat.
Since opening its doors, the
course has seen an uptick in activ-
ity, Kenney said. The golf team
from Illinois Valley High School
has spent quite a bit of time there
as of late; all the slots for Monday
night twilight golf have filled; and

Items still needed for Grad Night auction
Donations to be auctioned at the
TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves
More) Grad Night annual silent auction
on Thursday, May 14, still are needed.
This fund-raiser accounts for a
major portion of the monies needed to
finance the 2009 IVHS Safe and Sober
Grad Night Party. The more items,
(new, used, vintage, services, gift cer-
tificates, etc.) available, the more
money the auction will provide for the
venture, said the sponsor.
Besides the silent auction, there
will be “a nice formal sit-down dinner
served by none other than your IVHS
seniors.
“A sumptuous meal prepared by
Mayor Don Moore will include Caesar
salad, baron of beef, sour-cream-and-
chives mashed potatoes, peas, and a
sinfully delicious surprise dessert. This
is a meal we are told, that the good ol’
boys at the I.V. Lions Club can’t pass
up when it is the mayor’s turn to do
dinner for the club.”
As another part of the TEAM
event, I.V. Booster Club members will
be at the dinner and auction in support
of the theme, “Show your Spirit, Let’s
Paint the Night Red and White!” They
will have informational brochures
available, and club members will be
able to answer questions.
“This year we will also have a 20-
minute live auction at the end of the
evening for several larger items,” said
Bobbie Loyd, Grad Night chairman.
“This will be a memorable event, re-
gardless of the economy.
“The community banding together
for one another will make it a wonder-
ful night,” she said.
The 2009 TEAM Grad Night silent
auction and dinner will be held in the
IVHS multipurpose room beginning at
5:30 pm. (See the ad elsewhere in this
issue).
Some donations can be dropped at
the school office, “Just tell them it is for
the silent auction,” or phone Loyd at
(541) 659-2028 to arrange for your
item to be picked up.
“Also,” said Loyd, “if you would
like to just donate cash, that is fine too.
For dinner tickets phone 659-2028 to
reserve your spot.”
Lovejoy offers classes on Alzheimer’s
A disease information class on Wednesday, May 20, will be co-hosted by
Lovejoy Hospice in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association.
There is no fee for the class, which will begin at 2 p.m. Participants should
bring lunch. RSVP by Monday, May 18. Phone 474-1193 for information.
Loretta Ascencio, regional director for the Alzheimer’s Association, will
speak on the services and programs offered. Dr. Michael Villanueva, a psycholo-
gist at Southern Oregon Neuropsychological Clinic, will present, “Is it Alz-
heimer’s Disease?”
