Wednesday, April 8, 2009 I.V. schools invited to Rock Band III fund-raiser By DARLENE ANDERSON IVHS Grad Night Committee The Illinois Valley High School Senior Class Grad Night Committee will host its third Rock Band Tournament on Friday, April 24 at the high school. This fun event is open to the public and will benefit the 2009 Grad Night Safe and Sober Party. There is a small admission fee. The last two events were extremely well received by A contestant from February’s contest. ( IVN file photo) the attending public, and it is hoped that many more will attend to watch or participate in this last Rock Band event this year. The Grad Night Commit- tee issued a Rock Band School-to-School Challenge to North Valley and Hidden Valley High schools in an effort to solidify the Three Rivers District school rela- tionships with a fun event. North Valley responded that it is not interested in attend- ing. Hidden Valley did not respond to the invitation. To go forward with a School-to-School Challenge, this event will result in a tro- phy for the Illinois Valley school that wins, as well as prizes for the bands. Rock bands are invited from all Illinois Valley schools and can compete in the Elemen- tary Division, the Middle School Division or the High School/Adult Division. Parents, friends and school staff can join a band and help to win the trophy for their favorite school. This is the final in a se- ries of Rock Band Tourna- ments that will be hosted by the Grad Night Committee in support of 2009 Safe and Sober All Night Grad Party. For many of the older generation, this event could be compared to an old- fashioned lip-syncing ses- sion. However instead of mouthing the words, the mu- sic is generated on virtual instruments. Rock Band players use peripherals modeled after musical instruments to simu- late the performance of rock music. Players play their in- struments in time with musi- cal “notes” as they scroll to- ward them on the screen. Rock Band also offers game play for drums and vocals, plus lead and bass guitars. The committee will be taking registration calls by contacting Chairman Bobbie Loyd at 659-2028 or signing up at the IVHS office. Watch the Illinois Valley News next week for more details on en- try fees and prizes. I.V. unit Boys & Girls Club strives to ‘BE GREAT’ To address issues such as academic failure, gang vio- lence, poverty, drugs and obesity, the Illinois Valley Section of the Boys & Girls Club is joining a new inte- grated advocacy campaign, BE GREAT, a campaign led by national spokesman and Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington. In the survey, another 67 per- cent reported knowing some- one who has dropped out of high school. BGCA hosted a national Teen Town Hall meeting in Los Angeles in March 2008, where 22 percent of attendees expressed concern about the rising level of teen preg- nancy. Approximately 22 percent reported knowing students who regularly carry weapons on campus. “More and more, we are seeing our club kids needing extra help,” said I.V. Section Director Scott Thornhill. “With the way the economy is going, we see more parents needing to go back to work or get that second job, and kids are not getting home until 7 p.m. “ Thornhill added that numbers for the club’s home- work help program keep go- ing up, along with its U.S. Dept. of Agriculture dinner program. “Through our Triple Play program, we are making a specific effort to address the current child obesity issue facing our young people,” Thornhill said. “Getting our members physically active on a daily basis in some way has had a great impact on our daily programs, kids are more engaged throughout the day, become involved with more club programs and look for- ward to getting that daily rec- reation that they just are not getting on a consistent basis.” In response to all the overarching issues, the I.V. Section urges parents, com- munity leaders and all resi- dents to volunteer, serve on a local board or financially sup- port the local club and ask elected officials to call atten- tion to the issues affecting young people and direct more partnerships and resources toward solutions. Visit www.be-great.org to find useful resources and compelling stories about the diverse lives touched by Boys & Girls Clubs. Young people and their parents may also drop by the clubs’s I.V. Sec- tion to learn more about its programs and activities. According to Chapter Leader Teri Town, Doolaege joined TOPS in early July 2008 -- and by November, she had reached her goal weight. Said Town, “Randi has such an upbeat personal- ity and is an inspiration to all of us.” “TOPS is an amazing support group,” Doolaege said. “I enjoy helping others in any way I can, especially when it comes to living a healthier life. We have fun and share ideas every week.” Doolaege has maintained her weight loss through the difficult winter months. TOPS, founded in 1948, says that it is the oldest inter- national, nonprofit, noncom- mercial weight-loss support group. There are 209 local Chapters in Oregon.
