Page 12 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, April 8, 2009 OSP offers child ID kit Oregon State Police Missing Children Clearinghouse (MCC) wants to remind people of a useful resource that may prove invaluable in missing children cases. Since 1999, MCC has pur- chased more than 125,000 ID kits that have been distributed through- out Oregon. Last year, MCC be- gan distributing the newer ID Complete Child Identification and DNA kits that contain a cheek swab for DNA collection. The free kits, available in Eng- lish and Spanish, take only a few minutes to fill out and contain valuable information useful to law enforcement in the event that a child is missing. “These kits continue to be a wonderful proactive method to be prepared in case your child ever becomes missing,” said Judy Hayes, of OSP’s Missing Children Clearinghouse. “They are also a great way to help open up commu- nication lines with your children regarding child safety,” she said. Since more than half the miss- ing person entries in LEDS (Law Enforcement Data System) involve juveniles, the OSP MCC empha- sizes to parents that they should be proactive by preparing an ID kit and keep it home so it could be available during the first hours a child is missing. MCC provides the free kits that include an area for a photograph, fingerprints, dental records, physical information, and a DNA sample. Hayes pointed out the impor- tance of having updated photo- graphs placed in the kits as a child’s look changes. “Whether it is your first ID kit or not, an updated photograph should be placed in the kit each year. Statistics have shown that one in six missing children are located or recovered because of a photo- graph,” said Hayes. The child ID Complete kits were purchased with money raised during the annual OSP Missing Children Golf Benefit in Salem. The 2008 golf benefit raised $9,300 to help buy 15,000 to 17,000 child ID kits. Parents and families may ob- tain a child ID Complete kit by phoning (800) 282-7155 or e-mail judy.hayes@state.or.us.
