Pursuit of partnerships IVCDO’s
recipe for successful endeavors
ODFW offers hunt applications online
Hunters now can apply for controlled big
game hunts online using the Oregon Dept. of
Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) online license sales
site.
“We’re pleased we can now offer this ser-
vice, which should make controlled hunt appli-
cations a lot more convenient for hunters,” said
DeAnna Erickson, ODFW License Services
manager.
ODFW limits the number of hunters for
certain big game hunts (some deer and elk hunts,
all pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and Rocky
Mountain goat hunts) for game management
purposes and “to enhance the hunting experi-
ence.” Hunters must apply for tags for these
“controlled” hunts by midnight PST May 15. A
random computer drawing occurs in June, and
hunters are notified about results by June 20.
Online license fees are the same as fees
paid at an ODFW licensing agent or an ODFW
office — $4.50 for a controlled hunt application.
Online controlled hunt applications can be
printed instantly, so there are no shipping and
handling fees. (A fee may apply if the applica-
tion is purchased with other license documents.)
ODFW accepts VISA and MasterCard for
online payment.
A list of frequently asked questions about
online license sales is available on the ODFW
Website. Online controlled hunt applications for
fall turkey and sage grouse will not be available
until after tag numbers are adopted by the Ore-
gon Fish & Wildlife Commission in August.
Specific fall 2009 big game tag proposals
will be available in early May. Hunters should
carefully consult the 2009 Oregon Big Game
Regulations before applying for a controlled
hunt online and avoid these common mistakes:
*Getting personal information wrong. Dou-
ble-check your name, birth date, phone number,
address, and Hunter/Angler I.D. number before
applying.
*Choosing the wrong hunt. Hunt numbers
can change. Double-check your hunt number
with current regulations so there is no risk of
losing hard-won preference points. Don’t rely
on hunting buddies for this information.
*Not including correct daytime telephone
information. ODFW needs your current phone
number so that it can get in touch with you if
there is a problem.
*Getting party details wrong. Double-check
party information before you apply. ODFW’s new
license sales system has made applying as a party
easier. (Once one member applies, the system
accesses that information as other party members
apply.) Be careful not to exceed party size on your
application — for example, for pronghorn ante-
lope hunts the maximum party size is two.
For hunters who purchase controlled hunt
applications by fax, mail order, or at license
agents, avoid these common errors:
*Faxing multiple applications. Not only
does this confuse ODFW staff, but the appli-
cant’s credit card could be charged multiple
times, which takes time to correct.
*Writing illegibly. Write neatly and legibly
to ensure that applications are processed cor-
rectly.
*Waiting until the last minute to apply at
license sales locations. Make sure you know the
hours of the license agent you will visit. Stores
have been known to stop accepting customers
because of long lines on deadline day (May 15).
Get your application in before the deadline to
avoid this problem.
Remember that if you purchase a big game
or turkey tag, you are required to report hunt
results online or by phone to (866) 947-6339. It
is recommended to report within 15 days of the
end of the season or hunt. Reporting is required
even if you did not fill your tag or go hunting.

The March 19 meeting was held
in an as-yet-under-construction wing
of the new RCC business center. The
epitome of partnership, the former
Kerby Belt Masonic Lodge building
was donated to RCC for use a com-
munity center. In partnership with
RCC and with a grant from USDA,
the building is set to provide
“neighborhood one-stop shopping” for
business needs from counseling and
finance to marketing and employee
relations, Houck said. The building’s
anchor tenant is the Southern Oregon
Guild, which is in the business of part-
nering with its member artists to help
them improve their commercial suc-
cess.

the national monument) to highlight what the
area has to offer in terms of art and music.
Emilie Young, marketing coordinator for
the friends group, said that community involve-
ment is crucial. She invited valley residents to
rediscover the Oregon Caves.
“If you haven’t taken a cave tour in the last
five years,” Young said, “it’s time to go again.
They are always opening up new rooms, and
there is always new information to share.”
This season's events include classical guitar
concerts, and a commemorative pack train ride
from Williams, reminiscent of the trip made
regularly before completion of Caves Hwy.
(Hwy. 46) in 1922. Also, an Octoberfest cele-
bration in the fall. NPS will host a Community
Day at the caves on May 9, with free cave tours.
Jack Walker, Kathaleen Ponder and Menno
Kraai were re-elected to the IVCDO board.
Kraai issued an invitation to the community
to participate in the IVCDO and contribute ideas
and problem-solving skills.
Another shining example of partnership is
IVCDO’s operation of the
Chateau at Oregon Caves Na-
tional Monument. While the
community organization is the
concessionaire at the site, it
works closely with the Na-
tional Park Service (NPS),
which owns the historic lodge,
and a new group, the Friends
of the Oregon Caves and Cha-
teau, which will help demon-
strate community support for
the long-term restoration and
preservation of the chateau.
Through a marketing blitz
which includes an updated
Website, IVCDO hopes to use
the occasion of the chateau’s
Sue Williams discussed a new equestrian trail system.
