Page 10 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, February 18, 2009 Asante reports lay-offs, closures and facility sales On Wednesday, Feb. 11, Southern Oregon-based Asante Health Systems announced a total of 94 layoffs and the sale and clo- sure of some of its operations. The company reported a defi- cit of more than $1.2 million at the beginning of its fiscal year, which began on Oct. 1, 2008. According to an Asante press release, contin- ued difficult economic conditions have resulted in lower patient vol- umes, decreased payments, in- creased bad debt and mounting charity care costs. All of those fac- tors have left the company with a projected $15 million loss by the end of the fiscal year, the press release stated. As part of its overall restruc- turing, Asante’s management team will be reorganized and reduced by 14 positions, and the Hearthstone nursing home in Medford will be listed for sale, along with the As- ante Home Care facilities in Med- ford and Grants Pass. The Ashland Hand Clinic will close by April 11, and so will Genesis, an in-patient and outpatient drug rehabilitation center. Room service at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass was discontinued as of Feb. 5, and valet service at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford will be halted as of April 17, according to the press release. The Washington Outpatient Center’s laboratory station will be closed by Feb. 20, and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program in Grants Pass will be discontinued on June 30. Also, the Early Learning Cen- ter, which provides daycare to members of Asante’s workforce, will be closed by March 27. Approximately 50 positions throughout Asante have been de- creased in hours, equaling a reduc- tion in over seven full-time equiva- lent positions. Severance packages and new employment assistance will be provided to the employees who have been laid off, the press release stated. The company said it also plans to work closely with the po- tential buyers of the facilities it has listed for sale in order to retain the 220 people currently employed by those programs.
