Deer-vehicle crashes can be avoided Autumn is deer mating season -- which means that deer are on the move and less cautious about darting onto roads. Caltrans noted that driv- ers should be extra vigilant this time of year and follow these tips for driving in deer country. *Be particularly attentive between sunset and midnight, during the hours shortly be- fore and after sunrise, and in foggy conditions. Most deer- vehicle collisions occur dur- ing those times. *Drive carefully in areas known to have high deer populations. Places where roads divide agricultural fields or streams from forest- land are especially dangerous. *If you see a deer, slow down. Others are probably nearby. *Use high-beam head- lights when there is no on- coming traffic. The high beams can reflect off their eyes and warn you of their presence. *If a deer is in your lane, brake firmly, but stay in the lane. The most serious crashes occur when drivers swerve. *Don’t rely on deer whistles, deer fences, or re- flectors to deter deer. *Wear safety belts. *If your car strikes a deer, don’t touch the animal. If the deer is blocking the highway, phone 911. These tips used with per- mission from the National Park Service. Ray’s notes Pink R effort In the second year of its Pink R fund-raising cam- paign, the Ray’s Foundation -- supported by Ray’s Food Place customers and employ- ees -- tripled the $25,000 mark set during the first year by raising $93,342. Different this year than last, customers of Ray’s Food Place sites, including the store in Selma, were asked to do- nate the change from their shopping order to support 10 % OFF Labor November & December local breast cancer research and awareness. “Especially in these tough economic times, cus- tomers are less willing to give an entire dollar, as we asked last year,” said Alan Nidiffer, C&K Market chief informa- tion officer. “But,” he said, “they are much more willing to give something small like their change.” This shift in what customers are asked to give helped make the second year of the Pink R program such a success, Nidiffer said. C&K Market is a family owned business based in Brookings. The company oper- ates Shop Smart Food Ware- house sites, Price Less Food stores, and Ray’s Food Place locations.
