Bat that bit child in county found rabid
Generous donations from the community and
I.V. Rotary Club allowed the Illinois Valley’s
Southern Oregon Guild to provide use of thou-
sands of dollars worth of high-quality wood-
working tools to the Lorna Byrne Middle School
Wood Technology shop. Students helped
enlarge a wood storage building behind the
school. A sign (above) was handmade by a
Rotary Club member. Attending the sign-raising
Monday, Sept. 22 were woodshop students,
teacher Chuck Robertson and aide, Sonny
Moore. (Photo by I.V. News )
Following an investiga-
tion, Josephine County Public
Health Dept. JCPHD last
week confirmed rabies in a
bat that bit a child.
The health department
stated that the child is receiv-
ing rabies vaccine.
Rabies is an infectious
disease that affects the nerv-
ous system of humans and
other mammals. The disease
is almost 100 percent lethal
once symptoms begin.
JCPHD cautions that han-
dling bats can be dangerous,
and that children should be
taught not to handle them.
Any bat acting unusually
is likely to be rabid, the health
department noted. Unusual
behaviors include: being ac-
tive by day, being found in a
place where are not typically
found (inside the house, for
instance), and inability to fly.
If a person is bitten,
JCPHD advises to wash the
affected area thoroughly and
seek medical advice immedi-
ately. Whenever possible, the
bat should be captured and
sent to a laboratory for rabies
testing. The presence of ra-
bies can only be determined
in a lab.
JCPHD suggests that
dead bats be placed into
double-layered plastic bags
and placed in an enclosed
trash container.

Chief Harry Rich of Illi-

identified as Chad B. Bauer,
40, on Thursday evening, Sept.
18, after he was seen “doing
donuts” in his car on the drive-
way at Station 1 on Caves
Hwy.
Rich said that Bauer tried
to open a front door of the sta-

The chief said that Bauer
had tried earlier in the day to
obtain gasoline for his car
from the Oregon Dept. of For-
estry station on the south side
of Cave Junction. There was
thus the possibility that the
man was attempting to obtain
fuel from the IVFD station.
When the chief confronted
him behind Station 1, he said
that Bauer flung the contents
of his beer can at him and
pushed him. He then called for
law enforcement assistance.
Oregon State Police sub-
sequently arrested Bauer
