Page 9 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Driving in circles results in serious injuries OSP seizes coke on I-5 valued at $600,000 Two persons were in- jured, one seriously, as a re- sult of a roll-over accident at “Forks” park, and the driver was cited on charges includ- ing reckless driving, said Ore- gon State Police. The crash at Illinois River “Forks” State Park was reported Thursday, Aug. 21 at 5:40 p.m. The driver, identi- fied as Selma resident Joshua Harley Baker, 21, was cited by OSP on charges of driving while suspended, no insur- ance, reckless driving, reck- less endangerment, and fourth-degree assault. His vehicle, a 1984 pickup truck, was impounded. He was said to be “spinning tight fast circles on a dirt road in the park when a tire caught on a mound and flipped the truck.” Reported seriously in- jured was Cave Junction resi- dent Troy Craig King, 26. He was hanging out the right-side window when the pickup flipped, and he was pinned under it, OSP said. He was taken by American Medical Response (AMR) to a nearby landing site from which a Mercy Flights helicopter took him to a Medford hospital. Subsequently, said his mother, Susan Lowden, he was transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, where he underwent surgery. He incurred damage to his pelvis, and likely will be in a wheelchair for a time, and then on crutches until fully recovered, she said. Also reported injured was Jennifer Jo Brown, 43, of Cave Junction. She was sitting on the lap of Selma resident Cory Lee Livengood, 25, who was in the center of the cab. She was taken by AMR to a hospital in Grants Pass “with multiple nonlife-threatening injuries,” OSP reported. Livengood and Baker both refused medical treat- ment. Only Baker was using a seatbelt, OSP stated. In connection with the crash, it has come to light that Oregon Dept. of Parks & Recreation is concerned with a number of problems at the popular day-use park. Illegal camping and fires, public intoxication, vandalism, litter- ing and human waste are among the problems being noted, said Andre Briggs, Rogue Valley District man- ager for the department. He said that although closing “Forks” park is a pos- sibility, it is at this time con- sidered as the last resort. Other options to control law- breakers are being considered first, he said. “But we need to let the public know that closure is a possibility,” he said on Mon- day, Aug. 25. A p p r o x i ma t e l y 6 5 pounds of cocaine with an estimated value of $600,000 were seized last week on In- terstate 5 by Oregon State Police, assisted by the Doug- las County Interagency Nar- cotics Team (DINT). In connection with the incident Wednesday morning, Aug. 20 following a traffic stop on Interstate 5 north of Sutherlin, two Washington state men were arrested, and investigation is continuing.
