Page 16 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Day Oil Co. is in the process of dismantling its bulk plant on Caves Hwy. in Cave Junction, as it has been closed. The closure is due to EPA and DEQ regulations requiring changes Doug James, longtime Illinois Valley pharmacist who died a few years ago, is memorialized through his widow, Dena James, who made a $20,000 do- nation to help purchase new playground equipment for Evergreen Elementary School in Cave Junction. Sam Michelle and Dean Loyd Construction donated time and equipment to remove the old items, and Cave Junction Pool Committee gave $14,000. Ever- green PTA initiated the update, and students raised some funds through a number of events. Volun- teers worked Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22 and 23, to assemble and install the new playground, which will be unveiled on Tuesday, Sept. 2. ‘This is a great tribute support Josephine to Doug James,’ said Principal David Valenzuela. that are too expensive, said Day Oil. Oregon Caves Chevron is filling the gap, as well as Colvin Oil Co. and Mayfield Oil Co., both in Grants Pass. (Photo by Zina Booth, I.V. News ) Business a little slow? Helo recorder recovered Officials investigating a deadly helicopter crash in Northern California say that the cockpit voice recorder suffered heat damage that’s complicating efforts to extract information. Nine people died, includ- ing seven firefighters from Southwestern Oregon, and four people were injured when the fire-fighting aircraft went down in the remote Shasta-Trinity National For- est on Aug. 5. The National Transporta- tion Safety Board (NTSB) said that the recorder will be sent this week to England. There, the device’s British manufacturer will help inves- tigators try to recover re- cordings of voices that could shed light on what caused the crash. NTSB says that a team of investigators went to Portland to examine the helo’s two engines. They were taken there after being recovered from the wreckage. (The preceding is from a report in the Medford Mail Tribune). Also regarding the acci- dent, there is speculation as to why the aircraft lost power to its main rotor as it rose above helipad 44. Per- sons familiar with helicopter workings state that the situa- tion could involve a slipped clutch, that caused the main rotor to slip. 6th Annual Rogue Saturday, Sept. 27, Noon • Riverside Park 10 $ Duck Derby Cave Junction Wednesday, Aug. 27 Plenty of sunshine High--89 Low--51 Thursday, Aug. 28 Warm sunshine High--96 Low--51 Friday, Aug. 29 Sunny and hot High--97 Low--52 Saturday, Aug. 30 Sunny High--91 Low--49 Sunday, Aug. 31 Sunshine High--88 Low--48 Monday, Sept. 1 Sunny and breezy High--86 Low--48 Tuesday, Sept. 2 Sunny High--91 Low--47 Following are the high-and- low temperatures, and rainfall, recorded in Cave Junction at Illinois River Farm: *Fri., Aug. 15 104 57 .00 *Sat., Aug. 16 103 57 .03 *Sun., Aug. 17 90 58 .06 *Mon., Aug. 18 75 58 .00 *Tue., Aug. 19 77 51 .00 *Wed., Aug. 20 75 63 .02 *Thu., Aug. 21 80 57 .00 Advertising here doesn’t cost -- it pays! 592-2541 40,000 $ HV NV IV GP Thank you to our sponsors Platinum Media Gold Illinois Valley News Silver • Bill Thorp & Debi Ashley, Agents - State Farm Insurance • Photo Den Vision & Sound • Hellgate Jetboat Excursions • Club Northwest Bronze Edsen Donato, DPTSc, PT, OCS, CHT, CSCS Ed Goll, DHSc, PT Joint Replacement Jeff Wood, MS, PT Back & Neck Injury Jim McCall, PTA Sports Injury Austin Nickerson, PTA Certified Hand Therapist Three Convenient Locations Grants Pass (541) 476-2502 1619 NW Hawthorn Ave. #109 Cave Junction (541) 592-6580 218 N Redwood Hwy.
