One man died and an- other suffered nonlife threat- ening injuries Thursday morning, June 12. Fatigue is cited as a contributing factor. Both men are from Pasadena, County employee dies in accident Terry D. Smith, 51, a 16- year employee with Jose- phine County Public Works Dept., died as a result of an on-the-job accident on Mon- day, June 9, according to re- ports. Smith, a heavy equip- ment operator and senior level lead worker, suffered trauma when his head was caught between a sliding trailer and the dump truck into which it was moving. Charges can be amended or dismissed.) * * * Wednesday, June 4 *Theft of mining equip- ment was reported from a claim off Althouse Road. *Unauthorized charges on her credit card were noted by a Takilma Road resident. *A Cave Junction resi- dent said that an intoxicated teen-age girl came to her house at 6:04 p.m. looking for someone. *West River Street resi- dents chased a gray-haired man “with a mushroom- shaped head” from their yard at 8:19 p.m. *A father asked for help locating his intoxicated daugh- ter, who, he said, was hiding in a wooded area near Illinois Valley High School at 9:07 p.m. Thursday, June 5 *Speeding dump trucks on Holland Loop were re- ported as a continuing prob- lem. *Neighbors of an Addison Lane resident notified police at 12:47 p.m. that they had not seen the man for a week. He was discovered unconscious in his bathtub hours later and transported by American Medical Response to Three Rivers Community Hospital (TRCH) in Grants Pass. *Russell R. Brummett, 36, was cited for lack of a driver license on S. Hussey Avenue at 8:16 p.m. Friday, June 6 *It appeared a vehicle had been abandoned in a handi- capped parking space in the 100 block of Deer Creek Road. *In Kerby, a man frus- trated about continuing prob- lems with people who cut his fence phoned 911 several times, angrily demanding dep- uty contact. He later apolo- gized for his behavior. *Charles Derieft Brooks, 60, was cited on Medford war- rants charging failure to appear (FTA) on original charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUII) and fail- ure to perform the duties of a driver. *David Michael Luna, 18, was cited on a charge of violation of the basic rule (VBR/driving too fast for con- ditions) on Redwood Hwy. at Westside Road at 10:09 p.m. *Jaider Arlex Sarmiento, 31, was cited on a charge of speeding on Redwood Hwy. near milepost 27 at 11:55 p.m.. Saturday, June 7 *Thieves caused some $100 damage to tie-down straps as they attempted to Calif. Next-of-kin notification was by Pasadena Po- lice Dept. According to OSP Sgt Lynn Withers, at ap- proximately 5:30 a.m. a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup truck with California license plates was northbound on the left lane of I-5 near milepost 91 when the driver fell asleep. He was identified as Servando Lopez Castilla, 55. The vehicle drifted to the right across the lanes and onto the right shoulder where the pickup crashed into the back of a fully loaded log truck law- fully stopped on the shoulder. The pickup’s right-front passenger, Miguel Manuel Favela, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was using safety restraints, OSP reported. Lopez Castilla was trans- ported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, where he steal lumber from a flat-bed trailer parked near a Selma service station at 12:35 a.m. *Some sort of landlord/ tenant dispute erupted on Hogue Drive at 1:38 a.m. *Jennifer Marie Joy, 32, was cited on charges of driv- ing uninsured and driving with a suspended license (DWS). The vehicle she’d been driving was impounded. *A young boy was seen pushing a stroller with two younger children in Down- town CJ at 1:26 p.m., a con- cerned caller reported. *In Selma a woman said that her landlord threatened her and threw a rock at her, causing a bruise. *A tenant/landlord distur- bance was reported on Mona Way, off Reagor Lane, off Barnes Way, off Hwy. 46. *Paul Scott Dobson, 39, was cited on charges of reck- less driving, DUII (meth), third-degree theft and failure to stop for a federal law en- forcement officer on Briggs Valley Road. *Following a continua- tion of landlord/tenant issues on Hogue Drive, Robin Scott, 39, was cited on a charge of fourth-degree assault. *Theft of a purse contain- ing ID, cell phone and gradua- tion money from a Downtown Cave Junction restaurant was reported at 10:10 p.m. *A man and woman were said to be arguing about mari- juana on N. Kerby Avenue at 11:01 p.m. A report for fourth-degree assault was to follow. Sunday, June 8 *In Kerby, a man was taken to TRCH on a peace officers mental hold following a disturbance that involved pushing and shoving at 2:25 a.m. *Screaming and yelling was heard on E. River Street at 5:20 p.m., but nothing out of the ordinary was located. *Scott Gregory Case, 48, was cited on charges of DUII (alcohol), DWS and probation violation at Hwy. 199 and Watkins Street. Old Stage Road a man who reportedly had been shooting critters was told that gray squirrels are a protected species and warned to not take them out of season. *On Redwood Hwy. in O’Brien, Mark D. Patterson, 48, was cited on charges of DWS and failure to carry proof of insurance. *A “couple of kids” were on top of the roof of a bar in Downtown Cave Junction at 10:56 p.m. They got down prior to a deputy’s arrival. *Continuing telephonic harassment by his daughter’s schoolmates was reported by a CJ man at 10:28 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 *On S. Old Stage Road a resident reported a continuing problem with a 59-year-old man found sleeping in a vehi- cle. The caller wanted the man “trespassed.” *Two license plates and two cans of gasoline were reported stolen from a Deer Creek Road property. *In the 24000 block of Redwood Hwy. a man was said to be causing a distur- bance. He left when he heard the caller on the phone, but he uprooted a plant and took it with him. *While investigating a reported theft in the 24000 block of Redwood Hwy., Mi- chael Adam Massey, 27, was lodged in Josephine County Jail on warrants charging FTA, DWS and failure to per- form the duties of a driver. He also was cited on charges of manufacture, possession and delivery of a controlled sub- stance (marijuana). Wednesday, June 11 *Vagrants loitering near businesses in the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy. were com- plained about at 12:35 p.m. *A caller reported seeing a stolen vehicle being driven and abandoned in O’Brien. *On N. Old Stage Road a black-colored truck drove through a resident’s yard, Dusty says, “ Munchie’z pizza — best in town!” Lowest Prices! 592-6205 Toler fined on citation A $75 Sno-Park parking citation issued to Dave Toler, chairman of the Josephine County Board of Commission- ers, was decreased to $25 dur- ing a federal hearing in Med- ford on Wednesday, June 11. Additionally, a charge of providing false information to a police officer was dropped. Toler had been cited in March at the Page Mt. snow park near Cave Junction by Sean Thomas, a U.S. Forest Service lawman. Subse- quently, he charged that Toler had provided a false address when cited for the parking violation. That charge was dis- missed. It was attributed by the hearing official as either a miscommunication or misun- derstanding between Toler and the citing officer. Toler said at the time of the parking citation that he believed he’d parked in an area where Sno-Park permits were not needed. damaging some trees and a fence, the resident said.
