Celebrating 25 Years In
The Valley

an artist center and gallery at the
Rogue Community College Learn-
ing Center/ Belt Building.
During a simple drive through
town on Hwy. 199, many opportu-
nities for an artful experience are
evident. At the north end is Yanase
Jewelers, a purveyor of diamonds,
fine gemstones and handmade, cus-
tom-designed jewelry. Among the
most eye-catching attractions is the
It’s A Burl gallery, with its fantasti-
cal burlwood sculptures, furniture,
fine carvings and interior design
pieces.
Right across the way, Kauf-
mann Wood’s showroom features
durable high-quality furniture made
of Douglas fir poles. Next door in
the former Masonic building, Work
creates hand-crafted fine furnish-
ings and custom woodwork at The
Dovetail Joint.
The centrally located Kerby-
ville Museum features a wealth of
exhibits covering the history of the
area, from Native American arti-
facts, mineral and timber industry
history, day-to-day activities and
wartime memorabilia.
At the corner of Hwy. 199 and
Finch Road is Hampton’s Rock
Shop, where rockhounds Fredrick
& Gabrielle Hampton share their
enthusiasm for gems, minerals, fos-
sils, lapidary, and handmade silver
jewelry.
Across the highway, the SOG
Gallery features work from many
guild artists, and new works are
installed for each ‘Evening of Art &
Wine’ event. Due to be refurbished
in the near future, the expanded
facility will add to the dynamic arts
scene.
“The facility will have a big
impact on the regional artists be-
cause the SOG is planning to host
events and workshops to bring
well-renowned artists or suppliers
to come in and share materials and
techniques,” said Work, who sees
the importance of teaching the as-
piring artist how to build a reputa-
tion and reach distant markets using
the Internet and digital technolo-
gies.
“A decade out what I’m hoping
to see is a certificate program in the
business of arts and crafts offered
through Rogue Community Col-
lege, with internships at the SOG
gallery,” he said.
With such far-reaching vision
and a pool of creative and talented
artisans, this emerging artists’ en-
clave in a beautiful little corner of
Oregon will put itself on everyone’s
map soon.
