Charges can be amended or dismissed.) * * * Tuesday, May 6 *From Takilma Road at 12 past midnight came a call from a man who said that the sale of his truck was incom- plete, but that the buyer had driven away and it had all his tools in it. *At 16 past midnight, a vehicle that apparently had been sort of stolen was recov- ered on Caves Hwy. at Bear Creek Road. The woman owner didn’t report it stolen because of family ties. *Continuing the surge of locating stolen vehicles, a Toyota pickup truck reported stolen from Eagle Point was found on BLM land at Westside and Finch roads at 18 past midnight. It was said to be “in several different pieces.” And two other Toy- ota pickups also were at the site. *The busy morning con- tinued as Karen Y. Rester, 47, was cited on a charge of driv- ing while suspended (DWS) in Downtown Cave Junction at nine minutes before 1 a.m. *Community Oriented Policing (COP) was reported at 1:12 a.m. in Kerby. *Although there was not a full moon, an incident be- gan at 2:24 a.m. on S. Junc- tion Avenue involving a rov- ing mob of at least seven men and women who kept fight- ing, yelling and causing a general ruckus. Some racial name-calling was reported. *In connection with the preceding incident, Andre Dwayne Wright, 23, was cited and released on a charge of fourth-degree assault; and Paul Clayborne Guthrie, 20, was cited and released under warrants charging four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, and failure to appear (FTA) on an original charge of harassment. *A deputy was flagged down at 10:45 a.m. at Red- wood and Cave highways by a driver who needed a “Fix It” ticket signed off. *Arizona resident Kim- berly A. Bennett was cited on a charge of speeding at 10:54 a.m. at Redwood Hwy. and Rockydale Road. *Following a report of an assault on Pinewood Way, Scott Gregory Case, 48, was arrested on charges of fourth- degree assault and probation violation. *Someone reported a dog “in distress” inside a vehicle while its owner was eating in a Cave Junction restaurant. The business owner was unhappy that the customer had been scared away. *A “bunch of kids were cursing and yelling” at a man on Hogue Drive, said a com- plainant at 3:41 p.m. No dep- uty was available, and OSP indicated that it wouldn’t re- spond as it was not an emer- gency. *Possibly because of a neighborhood dispute about loud music, a man was said to be racing up and down the 5000 block of Westside Road, causing lots of dust. He was warned about his driving. *It was noted by a mother that her runaway son was seen on S. Old Stage Road. *There was concern from another mother, on N. Old Stage Road, because some- one drove “really fast” on her driveway to reach property behind her house, and there were children playing on her driveway. *Cedar Raymond Jerome Yandell, 24, was arrested at 7:13 p.m. in Downtown CJ on charges of third-degree assault, fourth-degree domes- tic assault, and probation vio- lation. *Violation of a restrain- ing order was claimed by a woman on Takilma Road, although the call-taker re- ported that the complainant had no evidence that the per- son named in the order had been on the property. The complainant asked if she had to be killed before she could get help, and subsequently cursed at the call-taker before hanging up. *Assistance was ren- dered to “a large man” having a diabetic problem in Cave Junction at 10:52 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 *The owner of a 1984 paid-for Toyota pickup truck said that his locked vehicle with half a tank of fuel was stolen from N. Junction Ave- nue. All he has left is the igni- tion/door key. *For some reason, an alarm sounded at Oregon Caves Chevron at 4:07 a.m. *It appeared that a Saturn in the 300 block of Caves Avenue was the target of a @xx%! car thief who broke a door lock and damaged the steering wheel, but did not get the vehicle. *Jeremy Wade Vineyard, 27, was arrested in connec- tion with some sort of some- what wacky incident involv- ing a bunch of people on Waldamar Road. He was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, three counts each of menacing and pointing a firearm at another. *Vehicular hit-and-run was reported at Wilderville Store. The owner of the dented car (damage estimated at $1,000) thought she knew the culprit, but called later to say it wasn’t who she thought it was, after he said he was being harassed. *Some $150 damage to a Dodge pickup truck on Burch Drive was claimed in connec- tion with a damaged rear win- dow. A BB or pellet gun (and the shooter) were suspected. *In rural Grants Pass someone possibly upset about high fuel prices stole 50 bucks worth of gasoline from a pickup truck. *Aharon D. Hook, 37, was arrested at the sheriff’s office in Grants Pass under a warrant charging FTA on a fourth-degree assault charge *It appeared in Down- town CJ, after a truck owner found a gasoline can next to the vehicle, that a gasoline theft was interrupted. A sus- pect was in mind. *A large safe was moved and an attempt was made to cut it open on Foothill Blvd. in rural GP. The home owner said that the same thing hap- pened in January, except that case was a burglary. *On Saratoga Way in rural GP some nut in a pickup truck drove down the road twice while firing a gun. *In connection with a radio talk show during which they both had spoken, a man in Merlin said that the other guy poked him in his chest with a finger, and referred to fighting. Heated words were exchanged too. *At a Cave Junction store, a long-bearded man put two containers of beer inside his jacket. When an employee approached him, the man removed his jacket and left. *Theft on Ollis Road included a diamond ring (which was pawned), plus CB radios, an air compressor and tools. The suspect had been living with the home owner. *Extra patrol was con- ducted at “Forks” State Park at 7:41 p.m. *A strange odor and a ground-level cloud were re- ported by someone on Ken Rose lane at 10:08 p.m. *Gunshots were com- plained about on Briar Lane at 10:57 p.m. Thursday, May 8 *Possible harassment was reported by a woman who said that another driver passed her on a curve at Hol- land Loop and Takilma Road, and then cut her off. *A man talking to him- self and carrying what looked like a girl’s pink backpack was reported as a suspicious person in Cave Junction at 2:36 p.m. *A CJ business owner said that a vehicle blocking a driveway was not a problem because the driveway is hers and not for public access. *Jubilee Park was checked at 6:53 p.m. *On Eight Dollar Road a vehicle at a campground was checked at 6:57 p.m. *Verl Verdel Boatman, 49, was cited at the south end of CJ on charges of driving under the influence of intoxi- cants and failure to provide a breath test. He was warned for careless driving. *On the Eight Dollar Road green bridge, a man was contacted at 7:11 p.m. *A man and a woman were warned near the Eight Dollar green bridge regarding an unattended campfire. *Following a complaint that someone was throwing rocks at his house, Robert Charles Kelm, 52, was ar- rested under a warrant charg- ing second-degree assault, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, reck- lessly endangering, and point- ing a firearm at another. *In connection with the preceding incident, informa- tion about a woman suspect in the rock-throwing was to be referred to the D.A. *The continuing problem involving a neighborhood dispute in the 5000 block of Westside Road resulted in a threat and a blocked drive- way, a complainant said. *Someone in a car be- hind a CJ business was checked at 9:24 p.m. *Nicholas E. That would be a unique experience for the people of this county,” Bynum declared. The board and county department leaders are con- scious that they must make a clear distinction between ad- vocacy and education. “As a public entity, the county cannot advocate or fund advocacy,” cautioned board Chairman Dave Toler. “The county can develop facts about the issues and put them out there,” he said. But he acknowledged that the most-effective campaigns would be waged by civic groups and others in the com- munity. While he was encour- aged to allow his deputies to be available to the public to talk about their program, Gilbertson was adamant, stating that, “A police officer cannot engage in political activity.” However, “There’s noth- ing wrong with a little more visible presence to tell people what we do,” reasoned Public Works Director Rob Brandes. As an example, he mentioned how his department will de- vote staff time at the opening of the Jones Creek Bridge to explain to the public how $600,000 of its money went into the project.
