John Green Sowell was the contractor with help from Wallace Koh- ler, who lived aapproximately a mile down Takilma Road from Bridgeview. In 1910, Spence sold the building to the Illinois Valley Building Association, which then rented it to the Grange, veterans and other organiza- tion that wanted to use it as a meeting hall. In 1931 the building was purchased by the Grange for $600 from the association. Constructing a building of that size in 1904 was not as easy as if it were built today. There were no power tools, and electricity did not come to Illinois Valley until after 1931, many years after Spence Hall was finished. The building was origi- nally a two-story structure, and dances were frequently held on the first floor. When midnight came, the dance would stop and everyone would go upstairs for supper. The price of supper was in- cluded in the cost of the ticket. It is interesting that John Green Sowell and Wallace Kohler, the two people who built the building, often played their violins for the dances. The second story of the Grange was removed in 1957 because, according to a quote from Wallace Kohler in a 1983 article by Illinois Valley historian Ruth Pfefferle, they had constructed the building incorrectly. During the very earliest years of the Illinois Valley Grange, school classes were held in Spence Hall until 1912 when Spence School was finished. When the school opened there were 16 students and nine grades. Popularity of the Grange waned in the 1920s, and in 1927 the Illinois Valley Grange went dormant. In the early 1930s, the popularity of Granges increased nationally and this trend appeared to influence the reorganization of the Illinois Valley Grange in November 1930. It is inter- esting that the Illinois Valley Grange Master was Ashby Fulk, who had attended school in the Grange building when it was used as a school in the early 1900s. In the early part of the 1950s, Illinois Valley Grange set up a cooperative grocery and supply store in the old Josephine County Road Dept. building, a structure erected in the 1930s and located im- mediately east of the Grange Hall. The store closed after a couple of years of operation. Illinois Valley Grange continues to be active, and provides a variety of commu- nity services. They include a Community Food Bank, serv- ing on the I.V. Medical Cen- ter Board, participation in the B.O.O.K. Project, and teach- ing courses on canning and restaurant skills. It also supports 4-H, sponsors men’s and women’s baseball, and provides a place for dinners, tool sales, and meetings. Members carry on the tradition started in the 1860s of providing commu- nity service and equal oppor- tunity. - Roger Brandt IVHS Activities Calendar Brought to you by the folks at 592-3556 Cave Jct. 469-7545 Brookings 471-7487 Grants Pass 773-7487 Medford THURSDAY, APRIL 24 * Track co-ed team @ Elmira All day * Boys golf to Eagle Point GC Noon * JV Boys golf to IVGC - 2 p.m. * Freestyle wrestling 3:30 p.m. (wrestling room) * Academic Masters Competition 6:30 p.m. (Grants Pass HS) FRIDAY, APRIL 25 * Gear Up to U of O Duck Days 7:30 a.m. (U of O) * Girls golf to Running Y 11 a.m. * Track co-ed team @ Bob Newland classic - 4 p.m. SATURDAY, APRIL 26 * Girls softball vs. Hidden Vly varsity: 10 a.m. and noon * Boys baseball @ Hidden Vly varsity: 10 a.m. and noon * PROM 8 p.m. (cafeteria) MONDAY, APRIL 28 * Valenzuela’s 3rd period 10:30 a.m. (Althouse, Holland Loop, Bridgeview) * Parent info night 6 p.m. (cafeteria) TUESDAY, APRIL 29 * Track co-ed team @ St. Mary’s hosted by NV - All day * Gear Up to RCC - 8 a.m. * Art Share to Ashland OSF 8 a.m. * Valenzuela’s 3rd period 10:30 a.m. (Waldo) * Girls softball vs. North Valley varsity: 4:30 p.m. * Boys baseball @ North Valley varsity: 4:30 p.m. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30 * Fogg taking FFA to Crater HS & Jerry’s Meats - 7 a.m. * Valenzuela’s 3rd period (Takilma, Out ‘N About Treehouse) - 10:30 a.m. * Grayback recruiting Noon (cafeteria) * ASPIRE for juniors 12:41 p.m. Personal & Commercial Orders No Order too Small or Large Affordable Rates Call 659-6838 for quotes Stop by for a FREE $5 Discount Coupon $5 off tuxedo or formal gown, rental or purchase Not valid on discounted merchandise.
